Thanks, Harry. Yes, I normally keep wireless on for my Kindles when I am at home (so that I can sync last read page with my phone & tablet without having to think about turning on WiFi to do so).

I understand that this does impact battery life, and turn it off when I'm traveling. With my previous Kindles, I have been happy enough with battery life even with the setting on.

I'll let things settle in for a little longer and see if I need to run with wireless off as my new default.

A good point about syncing. I never read the same book on multiple devices, so it's not an issue for me.

I never turn my WIFI off no matter where I am and I read for at least an hour every day and I'm extremely pleased with my battery

Does the wifi suck up battery life when the cover is closed (I have the official one with the auto on/off magnet) or when you are not connected to and/or out of range of a wifi signal?

Most Kindles don't drain much battery in sleep mode even with WiFi ON. I think they do periodically wake up and phone home, but I've never had one drain much battery charge over night. However, if you let it sit in sleep mode for several days or weeks, then it can drain the battery.

With WiFi on you get about a week's charge. With WiFi off you should get about two weeks charge with normal usage.

I think the PW2 does have a little higher contrast, but its fonts look soft compared to the Touch making the Touch's screen look better in my opinion. Again, in anything but bright light the PW2 is easier to read, it just doesn't have the blacker blacks I'd expected from a new generation of eInk.

This was my experience too. The darkness of the font on my touch is much better than on the PW2's I have seen. I had 2 myself and my friend has one and I compared all 3. My PW1 looked better than the PW2's though.

I suspect the extra layer of material to give it a light has degraded our view of the fonts. The Touch (and all earlier Kindles) don't have that extra layer of plastic sitting on top of the eInk screen like the PW1 and PW2. Any time you put another layer of plastic or glass on top of an eInk screen, it will degrade the view of the eInk screen at least a little bit because no layer can EVER be perfectly transparent. The screen resolution of the older Kindles (including the Touch) are different from the PWs, and that might also affect how the fonts are rendered. Higher resolution does not necessarily translate into higher contrast and darker fonts.

I think you are right, Jack. What was also disappointing to me is that the font on my PW1 was darker than on the 3 PW2's I saw. That may be due to the more yellow screen, I'm not sure.

Good point. The PW1 has a light layer on top of a Pearl eInk screen. The PW2 has what I assume is a redesigned light layer on top of a Carta eInk screen. And there are several people reporting the PW2 uses warmer (yellowish) LEDs than were used in the PW1 (blueish). There are a lot of variables and differences that can be affecting the display of fonts, including firmware.

The funny thing is when I got my last PW1, the one I ended up keeping, and compared to all the other PW1's I still had at the time, the screen seemed quite yellow. My original PW1's all had very blue screens in comparison. Then when I got the PW2 wow it was SO yellow it made my PW1 look blue! Crazy. I'll be curious to see what happens next year with the PW3.

I think the LEDs are the same. It's the screen and / or the light layer itself that is yellow. I can see this clearly when I plug it into the PC and it goes into USB mode and the lights shut off completely.
