For covers, you shouldn't need to do anything. The device will generate them from the book when it needs them. But, the device configuration has some options for sending covers at the same time as the book. This has some advantages over the way the device generates the covers.

I am not sure that I follow this. I have never 'logged out' on the Kobo. Could you explain this to me? I know, I am an idiot, but hey, that is me.

Whoa! Did the log-out on the device and whipped out what little shelves I had!! The books were still there thankfully, but the shelves vanished in the blink of an eye! I sure am glad that I did not have 30 – 40 like I do on my Kindle!

Thanks for the directions Ken, now I know how to do it, and learning more everyday!

Well, … I feel almost like I am back to square one. Things were going fairly well there for a day or two, but now I can not get any more books to load up. I have tried to reconfigure the device and still nothing. When I load them on, the processing data will be anywhere from 70-90% and then it stops.

Tried to load on six more last night and it got to 90%. I thought that I would just let it go, so I went to bed. Got up this morning, no books and the battery was dead.

I have also reconverted the books, epub, kepub, and mobi. It just not want to take anything. I also tried once while it was processing to do a reset with a paperclip, (read that in a forum entry) it did not help. It just deleted the books that I was trying to add. I really do not want to do a factory reset as that would whip everything out and then I really would have to start over. I am trying to get it loaded up, as I have another trip in the next week, and will be gone a month. I there something else that I should try to do?

There are others who can go through how it is something wrong with your files and that you need to fix them so that they are up to the standards that Kobo will accept. I personally feel that the great high definition display of the AuraHD is better used with the alternative reading programs that are now available and can be launched from the Kobo "Home Page". These other programs will likely have no problem with your files.

That means there is something wrong with the "calibre.metadata" file on the device. This is created by calibre and records the books it know about on the device. When you reconnect it is used to match the calibre library with the device library. This probably means there is bad character in the file As it has the metadata from the books in it, that means there is something strange in the metadata.

That tells me the KOBOTOUCHEXTENDED is still installed and enabled. Earlier you said you removed it. This is the reason the books are being sent as kepubs. If you don't want that, you need to disable it, unisntall it or change the drivers configuration to not do the conversion. Only do the latter if you want to use the other function that this driver provides.

Once you do the above, send some books and see how it goes.

So I went through and rechecked and I did remove the KOBOTOUCHEXTENDED. In the Device Interface Plugins I currently have Kobo Reader Device Interface (2.1.3) and Kobo Touch (2.1.3) In Conversion Ouput Plugins, I have the KePub Output (2.2.5) and finally in the Store Plugins, I have Kobo (1.0.1) and I still can not add any more books. It gets hung up on processing content. Oh, I also have the modify epub tweek.

So I experimented, and closed calibre and connected the Kobo to the computer. When I ejected it from the computer, again it started processing content and hung up. And I did not do anything but connect it and disconnect it.

When I started to finally add books I did the configure device and I have epub, mobi and kepub selected. Some of my books I have converted to all three formats.

You said, 'If you don't want that, you need to disable it, unisntall it or change the drivers configuration to not do the conversion.' Should I uninstall all of them and start over? Also, because I don't follow 'lingo' sometimes, I am not sure how to 'change the drivers to not do the conversion.' so not sure how to do this. Any advice will be GREATLY appreciated!

Wow!! Thanks Ken for the info/links for koreader! Even I, who am so not compter efficient was able to get it installed within the blink of an eye! And it works too! I am so happy that I am not going to have to do a factory reset! I was even able to get more books loaded on today in preps for my up coming trip in the next couple of days.

The debug log clearly shows that the extended driver was used when you did that test. Have you done the uninstall since then? Just in case it isn't showing up but is still hanging around, could you check the plugin directory. To do this, open the preferences in calibre and click the "Miscellaneous" button near the bottom. Then click the "Open calibre configuration" button. Once that is opened, go into the "plugins" directory. Look for and delete "KoboTouchExtended.zip". Then close calibre and restart.

The fact you can select "kepub" as a format when configuring the device means that you are using the extended driver. The main driver has very little knowledge of the kepub format and does not list it as an option. As another check, is the last option on the configuration dialog "Title to test when debugging"? If there are more, then it is the extended driver.

Another check to do is after sending the book and before disconnecting, look at the drive for the device. Check that the file for the book is there. If it isn't something went wrong. If it is, then disconnect and see if the processing screen gets displayed. The next step depends on that.

The extended driver has an option "Enable extended Kobo features". If this is selected, then it will send epubs to the device as kepubs. And it will do the conversion each time a book is sent.

With Koreader the covers are on the first page, if they are embedded in the file. What I do for epubs without embedded covers is run them through calibre with the metadata set as I wish including the cover I want and then do an epub>epub conversion. That gives me an "original-epub" and an epub with the cover embedded, in the calibre library. I copy that epub to my device.

If the only things you want to change are the covers and the metadata, you can use the "Polish books" function or the "Modify ePub" plugin. Both will do these without doing the rest of the conversion if that isn't needed.

Will they include the cover into the .epub file? Will the file size increase by the size of the image?

Polish books is largely a front-end to parts of the conversion process. And my memory tells me that Modify ePubs calls the cover handling parts of the conversion. Both will handle adding or replacing the cover in the same way a conversion does. That includes using your default conversion settings.

So yes, they will add the cover to the file, or replace the existing one. They attempt to change the existing cover page, but if it can't find one, a new page is added at the front for the cover.

You might want to look at removing the KePub Output plugin. I got some very odd results when I played with using it though that was the 2.2.3 version. But then I've also seen some odd behaviour using his KoboTouchExtended plugin to send kepubs to my Kobo.

Generally, the hang on processing content is due to rather poor error handling when the contents of a file are not close enough to standards compliant. I had that happen a couple of times and that started me into the habit of using Sigil and epubcheck on all epubs before I load them into Calibre.

Ken Maltby Wizard Posts: 4,466 Karma: 6900052 Join Date: Dec 2009 Location: The Heart of Texas Device: Boox Note2, AuraHD, PDA,	There are others who can go through how it is something wrong with your files and that you need to fix them so that they are up to the standards that Kobo will accept. I personally feel that the great high definition display of the AuraHD is better used with the alternative reading programs that are now available and can be launched from the Kobo "Home Page". The books were still there thankfully, but the shelves vanished in the blink of an eye! I sure am glad that I did not have 30 – 40 like I do on my Kindle! Thanks for the directions Ken, now I know how to do it, and learning more everyday!

Things were going fairly well there for a day or two, but now I can not get any more books to load up. I have tried to reconfigure the device and still nothing. When I load them on, the processing data will be anywhere from 70-90% and then it stops. Tried to load on six more last night and it got to 90%. I thought that I would just let it go, so I went to bed. Got up this morning, no books and the battery was dead. I have also reconverted the books, epub, kepub, and mobi. It just not want to take anything. I also tried once while it was processing to do a reset with a paperclip, (read that in a forum entry) it did not help. It just deleted the books that I was trying to add. I really do not want to do a factory reset as that would whip everything out and then I really would have to start over. I am trying to get it loaded up, as I have another trip in the next week, and will be gone a month. I there something else that I should try to do? Thanks in advance!

In the Device Interface Plugins I currently have Kobo Reader Device Interface (2.1.3) and Kobo Touch (2.1.3) In Conversion Ouput Plugins, I have the KePub Output (2.2.5) and finally in the Store Plugins, I have Kobo (1.0.1) and I still can not add any more books. It gets hung up on processing content. Oh, I also have the modify epub tweek. So I experimented, and closed calibre and connected the Kobo to the computer. When I ejected it from the computer, again it started processing content and hung up. And I did not do anything but connect it and disconnect it. When I started to finally add books I did the configure device and I have epub, mobi and kepub selected. Some of my books I have converted to all three formats. You said, 'If you don't want that, you need to disable it, unisntall it or change the drivers configuration to not do the conversion.' Should I uninstall all of them and start over? Also, because I don't follow 'lingo' sometimes, I am not sure how to 'change the drivers to not do the conversion.' so not sure how to do this. Any advice will be GREATLY appreciated! Thanks again!

Even I, who am so not compter efficient was able to get it installed within the blink of an eye! And it works too! I am so happy that I am not going to have to do a factory reset! I was even able to get more books loaded on today in preps for my up coming trip in the next couple of days. But when I go to the books listing, I still have some books that do not have the covers. Got any tricks for that too?! Thanks again!

Both will do these without doing the rest of the conversion if that isn't needed.
