Kovid has committed changes to the source trunk to show an icon in the spreadsheet and take care of the refresh problem. And to ensure credit goes where credit is due, although he started with something I submitted, what is there now is 100% his.

The current icon is a push pin, used in both the spreadsheet and the grid. You can change the icon in the same way you can change the other icons. Its name is "marked.png" and is used only for this purpose.

Also worth noting: the ability to mark and unmark is now in base calibre.

I look forward to its release

IMO credit should split between kiwidude for manifesting the original idea, to chaley for investigating the inconsistencies between the cover grid and spreadsheet views and to kovid for implementing a the new solution

How will the new feature 'interoperate' with the more widely used Find Duplicates plug-in.

In the cover grid the gold stars sometimes show on 'unresolved duplicates' from Find Duplicates and sometimes on books marked 'arbitrarily' with Temp Marker.

Find Duplicates creates an additional restriction in Virtual Libraries - I think that's a recent enhancement/phenomena. At one stage I think I saw gold stars on books that Find duplicates marked and books that I'd marked with Temp Marker - at the same time. But now I sometimes see one but not the other and vice versa. I admit to finding it all a bit confusing.

I don't ordinarily use the cover grid, and I don't use Virtual Libraries much and when I use Find Duplicates I try to resolve any it finds immediately. And I don't let Temp Markings hang around too long. So in practice any potential for confusion is probably moot - for me at least.
