Collection names can be changed on all devices. Now that I've read this thread I'm going to change all of them to my current doctrines with numbers in front of each name (01, 02, etc.).

If one has less than 10 Collection Names, it should be a quick and easy process.

It should be an quick and easy process but I've found that it is not. I manage my collections for my Amazon purchases (over 3000 books) and I have over 100 collections in my main K4PC app. They are not that bad but I have empty placeholders every third or fourth collection, so I can easily add a collection in the various sections, if necessary. I also like them alphabetized and K4pc doesn't allow you to do this easily, hence another reason for the placeholders. I've changed computers and hard drives over the years so my account has 4 k4pc apps attached to it although I actually only have the 1 active app.

My paperwhite does not have as many collections on it as my k4pc app since I only keep @250 books on it, but they all use the same naming convention. Ideally I would like to be able to import my k4pc collections into my paperwhite but unfortunately I cannot get any collections to import into my paperwhite and when I experiment trying to import on a test k4pc app, they all import incorrectly with old collection names. And for the correct collections name it creates a duplicate with an @en at the end of it. Which is another point of contention because it was my understanding if the name was the same it would import the books into the existing collection.

As you can tell, I am confused and frustrated, which is the main reason I would like tech support to wipe my slate clean and let me start off new.

And you cannot change the Collections on devices you no long own, so those are going to stay in the server no matter what you do. And BTW, using a two digit prefix gives you up to 100 prefixes--00, 01, ... 99.

Yep, which is annoying but that is a minor annoyance compared to what is actually imported. I am still trying to think up a game plan for what to do if they cannot wipe the server clean.

From the Amazon site:

"Manage Your Collections Use Collections to organize your books, newspapers, and documents. Note: Collections made on Kindle for iOS can only sync between iPad, iPhone, and iPod touch. The option to import Cloud Collections occurs once, during the app setup. Syncing or importing collection to Kindle for iOS from other Kindle devices or Kindle Reading apps is not supported at this time. ..."

Plus, in K4PC the Collections do NOT sort alphabetically. My Collections are as follows:

01-Husband
02-Wife
03-History
04-Biography
05-Bible Study
06-Fiction
07-Active Content
08-Documents
09-Guides.

I've used a Device Reset on my KK 2009 since I am giving it away on Christmas. That leaves me with K4PC, KFHD 2012, PW 2012 and PW 2013.

KFHDX 2013 is on order.

The only return I ever made was with KK 2009. All the rest came in perfect condition. I have never purchased any Apple products and never will. Gifts of Apple products I have re-gifted within a week. All my grandkids use Apple products re-gifted by me.

Did you clean out the collections on the KK 2009? If not, those will show up on any eink devices on your import list. You can double check it but selecting the Import Collections option and see if it shows up on the list. As to K4pc they are sorted based the order they were created. If you do not have a lot of collections this is no big deal, but if you have a lot it becomes cumbersome to find them quickly and easily. Personally I have 95 "real" collections in k4pc, that does not include the placeholders or the headers of the different sections.

The only place I see an "Import Collections" option is on the K4PC. I don't see it on my PW 2013 or the other Kindles. Where is it located?

I did not clear out the KK 2009 collections since I didn't know where or how to do it?

However, with only 9 collection names manual entry on devices is no more than a 20 minute chore. If the KFHDX 2013 does allow collections, I'll enter them manually.

I've heard back from CS, they have removed the old defective devices from my account and are now working on removing all the collections from my devices. They had to get me to de-register my devices first, then they will remove them all.

Click on the Cloud, then click on the menu icon to get to the drop down list, it is in there.

How to import collections

I see it there. I went ahead and deleted all my Collections in K4PC and then recreated them per my pattern in my PW 2013 and now PW 2012 as well. I had to do that since the K4PC Collections did not sort automatically.

Collections are maintained for all my active Paperwhites registered on the Amazon site.

Then I had to download my 41 eBooks to get them on my hard disk. Evidently, moving them from my old PC did not make them live for K4PC for Windows 8.

If my new KFHDX has Collections, I now know how to import them properly. Thanks for your input.

I deregistered my KK 2009 and its collections did disappear with it.

According to the first CS rep I spoke with yesterday, he said you had to remove the books from the collection, remove the collections, sync the device and then de-register it so that there are not collections associated with it. In an ideal world that would make sense but the programmers obviously did not take into account defective devices or people de-registering without removing them.

I am really, really hoping this cloud collections feature will allow users to control their collections and not Amazon and their servers.

I first deregistered my KK 2009 which had a different set of collections. Then I went to K4PC for Win 8, clicked the Import button for Collections and it only showed PW 2013 and PW 2012 Collections. The KK 2009 Collections were removed from the Cloud.

Thus, the CS rep was wrong or the process was changed after you spoke to him.

Is the KK 2009 registered to your account? Re-register it and see if the collections show? If not then he probably was, though I am thinking that he most likely was. After all he told me tech support couldn't remove the defective devices and collections from my account, when in fact they are working on doing just that. Import the collections from your PW 2012 and 2013 and see if they import correctly, what imports is what is on their servers.

Go to K4PC to see your Cloud Collections

If you use K4PC for Windows 8, then you can click on the Import button there and it will show Collections still in the Cloud by device name. Your CS was wrong. Just using a device reset from the unit deregisters it AND deletes all eBooks and Collections connected to it.

Plus, if you open the deregistered unit, it does not even have a WiFi connection, settings or your name. Its all destroyed and would require a totally new re-registration.

By the way, you can NOT do that if you have disabled access to the Amazon store. You first have to use your password to enter the Amazon store and then leave access to that store as "on."

The only flaw in the process is that, if you import collections from one of your devices, it will be arranged in the order entered on the device and will not sort alphabetically. Thus, I deleted all the imported Collections and created them anew in K4PC for Windows 8 in my numeric arrangement.

I also notice that, if one removes an eBook from a device and then re-downloads it, it remains attached to its original Collection.

The other discovery I made was that eBooks read in K4PC for Windows 7 will not be accessible in K4PC for Windows 8. They all have to be downloaded again.

My experience differs from yours, I have de-registered devices which removed the content but when I re-registered it without adding any new content or collections, then opened the import feature on a different device this device is listed with importable collections, which were the collections before I re-registered it. It is for this reason that I am working with CS to get rid of all those collections.

I will try your import option in win8 and see what shows, but they do show and import in non-win8 k4pc.
