Oh yes, I have noticed. It's maddening. It's fine if one cannot see them, but I don't understand why one feels the need to follow people around post after post and basically call them crazy. The loyalty toward Amazon is odd to me. You would think Jeff Bezos was their father.

Optical Illusions are NOT Halucinations !

Your statements are downright offensive to those who can CLEARLY see the flaws in their PWs since it implies they are lying or hallucinating.
Optical illusions can be seen by many people and even photographed. There are thousands of pictures of "flying saucers" available for viewing. It is the same with desert images and they can be photographed.

Hallucinations are different and are a product of a single person's mind.

I've never said anyone was seeing hallucinations. I have used the specific phrase: OPTICAL ILLUSION.

Optical Illusions are bending of light waves to simulate real events and large groups can see them and photos can be made of them.

Stare at a wall for 30 minutes without distraction and you will see them. We all will see them.

These eReaders all use screens lighted by different methods. All are subject to many kinds of optical illusions. The trick is to just read the FONTS and forget the variety of lighting effects.

The PW 2013 has a much lighter background than the PW 2012 and projects an ILLUSION of crisper and clearer fonts. That illusion benefits our reading and is the only one we should accept.

Telling folks not to buy the PW 2013 because of other lighting effects causes them to miss a great reading opportunity.

Having "older" eyes forces me to focus on near and far vision and forget all the rest. Thus, I do not use glasses whereas almost 99% of the folks at my age do and even with them a large percentage have little or no vision.

At this moment in time, if one goes to the PW 2013 page at Amazon, there are 54 reviews. Of those there are 37 FIVE star reviews and only 3 one star reviews. Try and find other products at Amazon with over a 10 to 1 ratio of 5 star to 1 star reviews. That kind of response is very rare. If there were real problems, the ratio would be reversed and most of the products I see there have that unfavorable reporting.

It should be noted that ALL 3 of the one star reviews are NOT labeled Amazon Verified Purchaser. Thus, they did NOT buy their units from Amazon. Almost all the 5 star reviews are from Amazon Verified Purchasers.

By the way, I've reported a five star review myself at Amazon. In my opinion the PW 2013 is the best eReader on the market today and no dedicated readers should miss it. If they get a real defective one, Amazon will give them a new one at no cost to the customer. There is no financial risk to try one.

Finally, how was the PW 2013 you ordered?

Ok, I figured out what was going on with my collections. I had some books in collections, then took them off the device. I reformatted to embed the font I wanted, and put them back on. It was those pesky "sdr" files left behind that was messing things up. Collections showed that they had items, but the collections were empty. I deleted the collections in question and made new ones, put the new books in them, and they stayed there! So I am back to a 1 page home screen. (List view).(Why couldn't they give us more attractive collection covers for cover view! Urgh!)

I finally figured out last night what is bugging me so much about the Yellow screen on my new Paperwhite. My font is gray. Or is it grey? And it's causing eyestrain.

After all, if you go to the Amazon page for the Paperwhite, they call it Paperwhite for a reason and rave about the crisp font. I don't have that. Hopefully I will with the new one.

It's gray if you are American. It's grey if you are in the UK or Australia, and possibly Canada. But don't quote me on that!

That's the thing I really dislike on the kindles: the way collections are handled. Everything else I either really like, or can live with.

All kidding aside, this does not apply to everyone, as not all of us are living in the US. In my case, the service that ships my items to my country does have insurance in case that the product is defective and covers the cost of re-shipping it to Amazon in the US, but not what I spent shipping it here. So there are some of us who do take a financial risk by not acknowledging EVERYTHING, and really appreciate reviews and impressions that give us a clearer knowledge of the pros and cons that you don't see in blog reviews and such, and that can only be attained by the collective reports of real owners.

Just playing with my new paperwhite for a day, I am more or less happy with it. Although there is one small pinprick looking pixel on the screen, that is the only flaw that it has. The lighting is very even--especially compared to the lighted cover for the K3--and the text is easy on the eyes. When I looked at touchscreen E Ink readers about three years ago, I wasn't very impressed with their responsiveness; it's amazing how far things have come in just a few short years. I habitually make notes and highlights in the books I read, so it is nice to see that the touchscreen can handle those things much better than in the past.

Really sad that Amazon cannot seem to get control of their quality assurance problems.
You can return them quite easily at Best Buy. I asked and they give you two weeks for a complete refund. Not as good as Amazon, but enough time to check over the screen. I'm also sure Amazon would still stand behind it after the 2 weeks too.

I agree though, it's really a shame their quality control hasn't been better with the PW's. And while only a handful of people are reporting specks and pinholes on the boards, I'm betting more people have them and just don't notice it.

I don't on my new PW, but someone on kindleboards has the same issue in the bottom left of their screen on the new PW. I also had this problem twice last year with the PW1.
