Paperwhite Second Gen: First Impressions

Yes, everything about it is faster.

I was very happy with the lighting on my PW1 but the PW2 does seem to be more even and contrasty (<- awesome word right!?). I no longer have my PW1 so can't do a side by side.

Between the even lighting and the much faster operations/page turns/etc I am a happy camper.

If you want to find flaws, stare at any surface for 30 minutes in a concentrated way and you WILL find them aplenty. That is called Optical Illusions as contrasted with hallucinations which are only in one's mind. Optical Illusions are REAL as perceived but do not exist in reality.

Those pinhole reports here today on the PW 2013 are like the multicolor reports here last year.

Just because you don't see them doesn't mean nobody sees them. You might just have a bad vision.

If you can't see pink and green blotches on the following picture, good for you but everybody sees them.

Oh yes I read about this too and I do check the location of the poster, he/she is living very close to the border. Me on the other hand living in Amsterdam, a day trip is still possible since this country is so small... but let's see. Never say never!

Yeah, I was here for ColorBlobWatch 2012 (and sirmaru's fervent denials, and his later admission that his sight is not 100%), and those screenshots above could have come from my first three PWs, including one that Amazon support had me send directly to their engineers in Cupertino. I gave up after the third one and went back to my Kindle Keyboard (and that is saying a LOT for a serial early-adopter such as myself). I finally found a good one at Best Buy back in July of this year or so.

My PW2 is out for delivery today, and you can bet I will be giving an honest report.

Thanks for that! The PW2 does look slightly whiter on the screen, but it looks like the black is not quite as black, the contrast could easily be the same. I was hoping for night and day difference, instead I guess Carta is just slightly better than Pearl.

I have an issue with the new Paperwhite. I loaded some books (over usb with Calibre) created a few collections, put books in collections. But, although they ARE in the collections, they are also still out of the collections, which was not how things are done on the old PW or the K3 or the Ktouch (the only ones I have experience with). Can anyone reproduce this? Is there a setting I need to fix?

Well this REALLY sucks.
I was trying to put a picture onto the PW2 via USB but it wouldn't go into USB Drive Mode.
So I thought maybe it needs a restart.
I restart the device and now it has the "Repair Needed" screen on it.
I tried restarting, but no dice. Just keeps coming back to this screen.
Sigh....

On the top of my head, I think you need to set the list to sort on Collection instead of Author or Title. If you set it to Author or Title, and then set the display to My Items, you'll probably see all your items: books AND collections.

Djeez; this is hard to describe. It's the two options on the top right, in the book list.

If this doesn't solve it, then I don't know.

Hi I'm new to this forum. I was wondering whether it was worth upgrading to the PW2 from my K4, or whether I should wait/not bother? I like the fact that you can change the margins on the K4 to get the text closer to the edge of the screen. Also the fact that you can load your own fonts onto it. Any advice?

They're not imagining things but people (especially on these forums) have way to high of expectations when it comes it comes to their devices. It almost borders on paranoia.
