Very interesting hypothesis that does make sense. I think maybe there's an automatic algorithm to calculate the trade-in value based on the demand and supply and it automatically updates based on real-time info (if not why would the value change from day-to-day?)!

I've had good experiences trading in tablets and ereaders, at different times, through Amazon. Recently traded in an iPad 1, and they actually increased the price from what I had selected, so I received a higher amount. If you check Amazon's site often, you'll notice that prices change often on electronics, but I do think it's an honest program.

Thank you! I may try to trade in the iPad2, it was the most expensive model and I am not using it. My DH gave it to me when he bought the iPad3, but I really prefer my Galaxy Tab.

I'm kind of upset - my paperwhite was showed delivered yesterday and it's showing still not delivered in my account! I opened up a chat with Amazon and they agreed with me. They said it could take up to 5 days. The seller listed the used Paperwhites on eBay yesterday for $154!! I'm wondering if they are hoping to get paid before they pay us or something - like that's going to happen! No one in their right mind would pay that much for a used Paperwhite when they could get a new second generation for much less.

Although Amazon chat did said If nothing is received by October 3, 2013, then please let us know and we can submit payment for your trade-in

When I submitted mine the option for excellent was not available to check, just good. I had never even unwrapped my cord in the box. I looked at Amazon's TOS and it said that if it was received in better than expected conditions then the higher payment would be rewarded so I was expecting that for mine.

If anybody else does this >>> TAKE PICTURES before shipping.

Hmm. I recently sold my paperwhite without offers on eBay and was beginning to think I could have gotten a better deal but when I check on amazon for trade in value it says a max of $70 and makes no allowance for with or without offers. I was not impressed. I don't know how you are getting those inflated prices. The best I could do on eBay auction was $107

$154 on eBay for a used, year old technology Paperwhite 1 seems rather high. You can buy a new Paperwhite 2 without ads for $139.

The prices on Amazon trade in change almost daily. For instance, 2 days ago the trade in for the 3G PW was 103.00, now it's 70.00. I saw the Wifi PW as high as 122.00 for trade in and as low as 20.00.

When I checked on my PW wi-fi it wasn't even offered for trade in!

Also since I don't have the box or paperwork I really can't trade it in anyway can I? I don't want it mailed back to me. If I sent it I don't want it back and lose money either.

I just checked, it's now $70, for 'like new'. $63 for 'good', and $0.75 (yes 75 cents!) for 'acceptable'.

Truly bizarre!

Always a good idea to keep the box; although it's only cosmetic, it dramatically increases the resale value.

I just checked again, and there is no trade in box. I am logged in and check too.

Since I don't have the box guess I will just keep and wait until the next upgrade. I am getting frustrated with the page turns though. Otherwise I like it.

I gotta say this is a great deal and makes me wish that Kobo did something similar! Some people are able to upgrade to the new ereader practically for free!

I received my payment today - they didn't "upgrade" me to the excellent though. Oh well. I wish I had gotten the payment before they had shipped the new one but it's not like I never shop on Amazon or anything.

Maybe you can trade it in on amazon.com - they take all sorts of electronics, not just Kindles.
