Ah, yes, a classic interpretation.

Actually, I was mistaken in my post above. I finished Pegasus in Space, and quite liked it. The book I'm currently wading through is The Rowan.

I'm going to need a stiff dose of hard science and detailed socio-political intrigue after this. Maybe some C.J. Cherryh, or Ian Banks.

Just started reading Anathem - first few pages made me wish it were a pbook so I could throw it down in disgust but I've really got into it now.

Just finished:

The Lord of the Rings (The Hobbit, The Fellowship of the Ring, The Two Towers, and the Return of the King) by J.R.R. Tolkien. I do this once a year, as well as watch the extended version of the movies afterward. Loved them, as always.
Coyote: A Novel of Interstellar Exploration by Allen Steele. Not sure what to think, pretty good, but falls flat in many areas. Going to read the sequels.

Next up:
The Silmarillion by J.R.R. Tolkien and Christopher Tolkien. This will be the first time I've really read the history of the Elder Days and the creation of Arda.
Coyote Rising by Allen Steele (the sequel to Coyote)

Gave up on The Rowan (may finish it later). Currently rereading Fuzzy Sapiens, an old favorite.

Do you start to read it in September? Some time around Bilbo's Birthday?

I had a friend from Germany who read The Lord of the Rings every year, and he started sometime around Bilbo's birthday. I found it a bit funny, because it reminded me of Jewish New Year....

Just finished Water for Elephants by Sara Gruen. Very well written and an interesting read that should appeal to many interests.

cheers

I suggest you give The Silmarillion a miss. I read it. Well, more like plodded through it. It was awful, horrible, drek and really not fun to read. There's no real story there. It's just dull as can be. Please don't waste part of your life with it. You'll never be able to get it back.

On the other hand, I enjoyed getting all the pieces of backstory to the LOTR series found in the Silmarillion.

The Silmarillion was a difficult read for me but definitely worth while as gives you more of Middle Earth history. It is not a real story, but more like history.

One warning. Do not expect a coherent narrative in the style of LoTR. Imagine you are sitting in the Hall of Fire in Rivendell, listening to the loremasters recount tales of the Elder Days. The tales will vary in style and tone, depending upon the tale and the teller.

I was tickled by the creation myth, with Eru as a composer, propounding themes of music, and the Ainur as a heavenly orchestra, singing the themes Eru propounded, each adding and interpreting according to its nature. The Music brought forth a vision of Arda, the world, which so entranced many of the Valar and that they begged Eru to make it real that they might go and dwell there.

I'm finding all your thoughts on the Silmarillion to be true. I didn't expect it to be a story, strictly-speaking, but I am enjoying getting the back story and connecting the names and places to their origins.

Well, I finished _Fountain Filled With Blood_. I am really liking these and will probably get more. I started on _Mars Girl_ but I gotta say it jumps around alot in the beginning. I'll stick with it for a bit more... since I've heard good things about it here.
