In mid-June, the Wall St. Journal began delivering to me a free six-month daily subscription. I have no idea why they did so, but I am glad they did.
A week later Groupon offered The News & Observer at a special rate - 26 weeks of seven-day delivery for $27.00. So I signed up for that. Now I spend 90 minutes at McDonald's each morning drinking coffee and reading the papers. |

I subscribe to my local paper. Costs me $11/month. I get about $35/month in coupons that I actually use (including discounts at clothing stores), so it saves me money. Otherwise, I'd never bother with the print edition.

You can save a lot of money with the coupons that come in most newspapers.

I bypass the newspaper by loading coupons onto my Fred Meyer rewards card and printing out an occasional digital coupon or two.

I wonder if that's a regional thing, since I don't see many coupons in local papers. That said, there are a lot of other sources for coupons: flyers, grocery stores, and online (both sought out and emailed).

We don't get the coupons in the paper that we did at one time—RedPlum, for example, now comes in the mail rather than as a newspaper insert—but on balance, if you're a coupon clipper, there are still more than enough coupons in the paper every week to not only pay for your subscription, but to save you a healthy chunk of change at the supermarket every week. In our area, at least.

I honestly can't remember a time in my life when my family weren't subscribed to a news publication of some sort. Some of my earliest memories, when I was about 4, are of sitting on the floor with the newspapers spread out before me.
E-news is still taking off here in Malaysia. Some of the local papers have begun to offer subscriptions to their online and print editions together in a bundle. At the moment we're subscribed to three print newspapers. Two (one in English and the second in Chinese) on weekdays, and a third (English) newspaper on Sundays. Mum sometimes brings home yet another paper from her office. Last edited by Sefiriot; 09-25-2013 at 01:02 PM. |

I subscribed to the local newspaper when I went to live on my own and still do. They now also have an Android app, which shows the same newspaper, which I'll subscribe to as well (still only a free trial period available)

It's rare that I buy a paper on impulse and even more rare that I subscribe to one. From time to time, I subscribe to free magazines and newspapers. I like Barrons and the WSJ. I wouldn't pay for either and I prefer the WSJ on my Fire to the print edition.

I get the local paper delivered daily and spend 1-2 hours reading it each day. I also check news on the internet so I guess I'm a news junkie. I still read the local paper daily though because it's a decently written/edited paper. And I still like the experience of reading a paper because there's a sense of "now I'm caught up with all relevant current events after reading the paper from cover to cover" that I don't get from reading news on the internet. With the internet, there's a tendency to pick and choose, and then drill down (usually chasing threads that leads to other threads) - the internet great for in-depth research and analysis on a particular subject but I don't always come way from it with a feeling that I'm aware of generally things that are going on in the world. With the newspaper, there's a explicit beginning and end to the experience that I guess I like - it forces a pace and depth of intelligence gathering that works for me. It probably doesn't work for everybody, and it's only as good as the editors and writers of the paper. But in my case, it works for me.
