iPad2 and iOS7 upgrade - WARNING
I have an iPad2, I think 2-3 years old, use a Windows 7 computer, and live in Australia.
This evening when I attached my iPad to my computer to check out an ebook with iBooks I got a message that the iOS7 upgrade is available, and asking if I wanted to get it. Not knowing any better I downloaded and installed the iOS7 upgrade. When I next tried to use the iPad attached to my computer I got a message to the effect that the iPad could not work without the latest iTunes, available from www.itunes.com.uk. I could not use my iPad at all. I went to the URL above, downloaded and installed iTunes, and my iPad2 came back to life. I am distinctly unimpressed with Apple: - for not telling me before I upgraded the OS that it would kill my iPad unless I installed the latest iTunes - for putting out software which is too dumb to check that it can be installed without damage - for not making the latest iTunes available from the US, where I get all my upgrades from. Only time will tell whether I have problems with upgrades in future. If I'd known beforehand this would happen I would not have installed the OS upgrade. I certainly don't like the new appearance, and was reasonably happy with the performance of the old OS. Edit: I'm sorry, I was so cranky about these events that I posted to the wrong forum. Moderator, could you move this to the Apple forum please? Last edited by AlexBell; 09-20-2013 at 05:30 AM. |

Killed your iPad? Installed with "damage"? Hyperbole, much? New versions of iOS have always required new versions of iTunes to sync.
If you don't want to upgrade, don't upgrade. As I understand it you clicked 'yes' when asked if you wanted to upgrade. There is even a Terms of Service agreement that you can read before going through the installation, which contains all the information you claim Apple hid from you. Apple didn't do anything you didn't tell it to do. Last edited by holymadness; 09-20-2013 at 09:24 AM. |

First, there were messages I received that stated iTunes 11.1 was required for iOS 7. So I updated iTunes first.
Second, your iPad was not destroyed nor rendered inoperable, it merely could not connect and sync with iTunes 11.0. I'm sure your iPad worked just fine other than that. |

And you can downgrade it. You'll have to download the 6.1.x version you had, and convince itunes that the ipad is in recovery by putting it into DFU mode, then shift click restore (yes, you will have to restore, it wont update to that, but you can restore apps etc it from your last 6x version before you use it for too long).

It worked in the sense of being able to use most of the apps after I upgraded the iTunes from the UK, but when I later went to the Apps store it told me that I wasn't recognised in the US store, and had to use the Australian store. The nice man in the local Apple store was able to get me back to the Australian apps store, but it must have taken him ten minutes.

Thanks for the warning. We have two iPads (2&3) and an iPhone 5. I don't want iTunes 11 and plan to avoid it as long as possible, so I'll avoid downloading iOS 7.

iTunes 11.1 (which is required for iOS 7) is better than previous versions. BTW, you can setup iTunes 11.x to look like iTunes 10.x, if that is the reason you don't want to update to it. In previous versoins of iTunes I had a lot of issues syncing my devices over WiFi. My iPad 3 never worked with WiFi sync. But with iTunes 11.1 it syncs without issue.

I was lucky and with some help I was able to get back to iTunes 10.6. I dare not go near iTunes 11 again until a) I buy a device that needs it, and right now that's not looking likely, or b) I know it can handle playlists. Edited to say I never use wifi sync, my iTunes library is to large for that, I always sync via iTunes. |

...unless you prefer managing your podcasts in List View, in which case it is an unmitigated disaster. Every episode ever released, stuff you listened to and deleted (or chose to not download at all) years ago, will show up with a cloud icon next to it. Undeletable.

Thanks, Josieb1. The Apple technician who fixed my iPad said it would be better to leave iOS7 on the iPad since it is going to take over the world anyway - or words to that effect.
