Short supply of the latest Apple iPhone has left mobile networks "frustrated" and "concerned", the BBC has learned.

Several networks said that UK stock of the latest premium model, the 5S, was severely limited and would be likely to cause disappointment.

No networks contacted wanted to be identified over worries they could be further disadvantaged when supplies were replenished.

Apple has said the shortage was due to the product's popularity.

"Demand for the new iPhones has been incredible and we are currently sold out or have limited supply of certain iPhone 5S models in some stores," the company told technology news site AllThingsD.com on Friday afternoon.

The sheer cluelessness of the Internet commentariat never fails to shock and amaze. "Hurr durr Apple is dumb, too stupid to even meet demand, amirite guys?" The iPhone rollout is probably one of the most logistically complicated operations in supply chain management and distribution that has ever occurred, and some schmoe on a forum—whose professional and educational experience almost certainly have no bearing whatsoever on the tasks under discussion—thinks that Apple should just snap its fingers and magically produce exactly the required number of devices with absolute foresight and precision every single time. It's the kind of comment that can only be produced in a bubble of perfect ignorance since even cursory knowledge of the enormous difficulties of managing this kind of launch would install some measure of humility.

But like I said, if you've got it all figured out, go ahead and do what Apple does.

Insiders from two of the companies told the BBC they suspected Apple was trying to drive sales of the cheaper 5C model, but that their own figures suggested customers had been hesitant to place orders.

Apple has prevented networks and retailers allowing customers to pre-order the 5S.

One network spokesman said they had "crates and crates" of the 5C, but that the higher-end 5S was being "drip-fed" into the market, and networks and retailers had been left "in the dark" about Apple's schedule for replenishing the stock.
