Yes, try the Phryne Fisher series by Kerry Greenwood. Start with Cocaine Blues, which is $.99, and has whispersync for voice at $2.99.

Thanks, this looks like a possibility, and it turns out I already own the Kindle version--who knew?

They've often got J.D. Robb (Nora Roberts) on sale. Decent mystery with a predictable dollop of romance plopped. in.

I also have gotten several Arthur Conan Doyle cheaply with the Kindle/Whispersynce thing.

I love the Phryne Fisher series, and most of them are available as Whisper-Sync enabled. The Australian Broadcast Company (ABC) versions were also excellent, though I don't think they made it to US TV. They have, however, made it to Canadian TV -- I watch them on BC's Knowledge Network. A second season is on the way.

I suggest Mad Mouse & Tilt-a-Whirl - John Ceepak series by Chris Grabenstein, narrated by Jeff Woodman. 99c for the books on AMZ & whispersync for 1.99

Ooh...perfect for the end of the shore season here in NJ. I've had Tilt-a-whirl in my Amazon library for a long time and haven't gotten around to eye-reading it....now I'll have to move it to the top of my ear-reading list.

My wife has me hooked on the In Death books. Sadly, there's no big WfV discount on the new one.

Thanks for the recommendations. I don't know about J.D. Robb--I really hesitate to start a series with so many volumes. Also I'm put off by perhaps too much romance, because of the Nora Roberts persona.

Amusement park mysteries might be a fun possibility, though.

Yeah, the Nora Roberts does show through in the two or three Eve-Roarke love scenes in every book (and I do find them a bit tiresome...Roarke's romance-hero perfection is starting to get on my nerves actually) and there is a light sci-fi element to the world, which you also said was not your taste, but it is very light most of the time.
But the cop murder mystery story, which is always the main plot, is usually interesting.

She also does a fairly good job of not requiring you to read the books in order, especially if you only care about the murder stories.
You could do what I did: Start in the middle of the series with a story that seems interesting, and then go back and read book 1 if you find you like the character relationships and the world.

My mother (and stepmother) is NOT a fan of NR at all but loves the JD Robb series like air. Constantly asking when the next one is out. Granted she eye reads them rather than ear but only cause I don't think I ever gave her the option lol

I absolutely, positively cannot knowingly start a series anyplace but book one! It would just be WRONG.

Romance AND science fiction elements too?--sorry, but I think that just killed it!
