Down here a lot of the retailers had a lot of the grey and some of the silver and the gold is as rare as hens teeth.

Sweet. I'm glad to hear this.

The big long-term question is: will the sapphire cover protect the scanner well enough that it continues to work reliably in one year? Two years? Three years?

If people's scanners are still working flawlessly this time next year, I'll upgrade to a new iPhone.

Gold is either the most sought-after colour, or the most supply constrained.

According to the Apple website, all models are sold out (no surprise there) but Black and Silver will ship in the next 7-10 days, whereas Gold won't ship until October.

I wasn't planning on upgrading just yet but I'm eligible for $50 discount in Verizon's new phone after two years program and Verizon's offering up to $200 trade-in for my 4s.
My old phone is in good shape with no scratches on the screen so with a 2 year contract I could get a new iPhone 5s for nothing or practically nothing.

My only worry is that I would lose the unlimited data since they don't offer that any more but I usually use less than 1G a month anyway. They had already discontinued unlimited data when I switched from the Droid to the iPhone, but for some reason they let me keep unlimited.

supply constraint. according to reports Apple stores only got 10 or less gold while most other retailers got none.

Jealous! T-Mobile stores didn't actually get ANY iPhones (not even the 5C or demo models) today - corporate held them all for web and downstate. And I couldn't stand in the Apple line to check on their supply. I'll be looking forward to your impressions, as I'll also be moving up from a 3G, too. I like my 3G's plastic body, so I think I'd prefer the 5C in hand, but the camera is making me hanker after the 5S.

Having insufficient/sufficient stock doesn't affect pre-order volume. If anything, fewer people will pre-order the Gold iPhone when they see it'll be next month before they can get one.

Apple is probably going to announce pre-order/sales numbers shortly, which I expect to beat last year's figures.

Maybe. But more likely they weren't sure how customers would react to it (remember the tech media when they found out? "OMG bling bling, so gaudy.") and kept orders conservative in case it proved unpopular. Remember that the gold iPod Mini was their worst seller, and was discontinued after a year.

I'm curious to hear the volume of 5C sales. I read a report from someone who polled people in line and nobody was buying the C. People waiting in line for a phone is a skewed population sample but I also don't know anyone myself who is considering the C instead of the S.

I very much doubt Apple will break out 5C/5S sales. They'll probably give just one figure.

Your best guide is previous years. All those people who bought the 4 or the 4S when the 5 came out? That's the type of customer who buys the 5C.

As a rule, people who don't care about having the latest and greatest don't spend hours in line on a work day to buy a new phone.

In previous years we got sales numbers directly from Apple (e.g. http://www.apple.com/pr/library/2011...r-Million.html ). Seems to me if this year is different that way then it will be a bad sign for sales. Regardless, there are analysts working quite hard to track Apple sales even if Apple doesn't spill the beans.

We'll see. How many people do you know who are buying 5C's? I know five people buying the 5S and none of them waited in lines today.
