For the second matter, you may just need better speakers. Though on the other hand, if you can't tell format 2 from Enhanced, then you might not notice the degradation in the Audible conversions either, so go for it!

Never had any problems with the audiobook conversions. I have often had problems with e-book conversions, especially when using the Calibre plug-in. Yes, the audio takes time, but ... so what? I don't need to babysit it; the conversion just chugs along.

I listened to the four formats on my PC, which has Bose speakers. Can't blame them!

I've had good success with dbPowerAmp. What you lose is the metadata, etc. But what you get is a clear MP3 (or whatever) with no restrictions. Also, it uses multiple available cores to allow you to do several books at once. A new version is in beta right now that will be fully 64-bit. But not sure how that will interact with the old piece of Audible Manager that is used to read the DRM'd book.

It's still a minor nuisance, but now that I've got it set up, it's fine for making sure I have archival copies.

On a virtual machine with 4 cores, I can convert four 6-8 hour Format 4 book segments to high quality MP3 in less than 5 minutes with dbPowerAmp. They are converted in parallel, and the output quality is quite acceptable, IMHO. (This is WAY better than some earlier methods I've tried, all of which had pops and other issues. And were s l o w -- essentially real time. )

Getting back to bargains, for a moment ... anyone have suggestions for cheap Audible books so I can use my $15 coupon balance? I've looked at the lists in the OP, the 99-cent Whispersync classics, etc., and I think I have just about all that I want from those lists. I don't mind buying an inexpensive Kindle book to get a bargain on the companion audiobook (like under $10 for both).

I don't generally care for romance, science fiction, paranormal, or anything gory; I like mysteries and suspense. Anyone have recommendations to get the most out of my coupon balance? Thanks.
