At this point I use iTunes strictly as a place to manage/store backup copies of everything. I started using iTunes with Audible back when I joined in 2004 and just never tried anything else. If I ever get really ambitious I'll make myself DRM-free copies of everything, but it'd be a lot of work.

I am using both. As a matter of fact, I only use the Audible app for whispersync for voice. But I think it's only a habit to use the iTunes app because I like iTunes. Both work fine, it's just a matter of taste.

I use the Audible app and really like it-- I haven't noticed any sound quality issues, either. (They also have this fun thing where you can earn badges for listening to books. It actually does motivate me to listen more, haha!)

How do you make DRM-free copies of Audible audiobooks? I didn't know that was possible.

There are a few ways. For me, it's more time and effort than it's worth, and the results can be of variable quality.

Basically any audio DRM can be bypassed, Google "Analog Hole" for more info. You can also burn audio CD's of Audible content and then rip them. Either way, a lot of work.

Format 4 isn't stereo? I never noticed. Are most books even mixed in stereo?

Alot of fiction is mixed in Stereo. I can't stand anything but the Enhanced. I don't notice too much difference between the two on my Desktop but put it on my Android device or Sansa Clip Zip and there is a major difference.

Here's the difference formats in bitrate as you can see Format 4 is 32kbps Mono which to me sounds like a the narrator is in a tin box or almost robotic. I disagree with mp3 quality. It's more like radio quality. Enhanced is 64kbps and stereo. It sounds like mp3 quality. Overdrive mp3s Audiobooks are 64kbps Stereo.

Thanks for posting that. As I said before, I am deaf in one ear and severely hard of hearing in the other. I wear a hearing aid that has bluetooth abilities. I need something that is clear to understand.
