Cool Andre Norton & Richard Castle

Now on to an older (1955) one by Andre Norton, Sargasso of Space (Solar Queen, #1). It was a freebie from Amazon a short while ago and when I was on Amazon getting it I found the next two in the series also available as freebies. It's turning out to be an interesting enough read at 25% but it also has quite a few atrocious unrepaired scanning errors which makes me wonder if I'll bother with the other two freebies.
Sargasso of Space proved to be a highly enjoyable space opera and in spite of its unrepaired scanning errors was actually quite readable.

Next, I'm going to read the new Derrick Storm novel Storm Front (Derrick Storm #1) by Richard Castle!

In the middle of reading Treecat Wars, but jumped out to read an Elizabeth Moon -- Limits of Power, the fourth in her Paladin story arc set in the world of Paksenarrion. I'll be back to Treecat Wars shortly, but wanted to take a break from it for a bit. I can tell already that it won't get more than about 3.5 out of 5 here.

I'm reading Ireland by Frank Delaney and enjoying it very much. Last month I read Edward Rutherford's Princes of Ireland and Rebels of Ireland. If I enjoy the immersion in a time and place, I hate to leave it behind when the book is done. So I may be on an Irish binge for awhile.

On the same note: next I will read Swing, Swing Together (Sergeant Cribb #7) by Peter Lovesey. After Three Men in a Boat by Jerome K. Jerome and To Say Nothing of the Dog by Connie Willis, I'm not ready to give up boating on the Thames circa 1889.

I also recently read A Traveller in Time by Alison Uttley. The detail concerning the way people lived, ate, and stocked their kitchens in the East Midlands near Derbyshire in both the early 20th century and circa 1560's was interesting. The time travel involved a plot to rescue Mary, Queen of Scots.

Also just finished Open Season (Joe Pickett #1) by C.J. Box and liked it so much that I used the Kobo 50% off coupon to buy the next several in the series.

Which was delightful, as expected.

Then I read one of my recent Kobo purchases, In the Blood by Lawrence Watt-Evans. An excellent collection of short stories about vampires. Highly recommended.

And now I'm reading 1636: The Devil's Opera by Eric Flint and David Carrico. More of the main-stream 1632 storyline, with an emphasis on some musicians that we've met before in Grantville Gazette stories. Looking good so far.

I was finding the Treecat Wars just a shade too juvenile, though I like the 'cats and the general story. So I took a bit of a break and will circle back around to it.

Have to take a little break from the unrelenting dread that I'm feeling while reading From Here to Eternity, so I picked up On Basilisk Station. Some interesting ideas, but it's off to a bit of a slow start; a lot of context is being built. Hoping it will pick up soon.

I finally finished Theft of Swords by Michael J. Sullivan. It took awhile since I haven't had much reading time, but it was fantastic! A fun fantasy with lots of adventure. I highly recommend it. I'm jumping right into the next book, Rise of Empire.

It is certainly a Young Adult novel. But I like YA, so that's OK for me. (I liked the Artemis Fowl books, for example.)

That was very good! I will certainly continue on in the Culture series.

For now though, it is onto another author I have never read before Arthur C. Clarke and Rendezvous with Rama. I know, I know - how can I have missed these authors before? Mostly because I read much more fantasy than anything else until this year when I have been intentionally trying not to read much. I wish I hadn't waited so many years.

I'm now reading Hidden Order: A Thriller by Brad Thor. I can't put it down. Either this guy has done his research very, very well or he's the best BS'er I've ever seen.

I've almost finished Mike Carey's The Devil You Know, the first book in the Felix Castor series. It's an urban fantasy series about a down on his luck London exorcist. It's very similar to the Dresden Files in tone, humour and type of characters. Not as good, though, but still worth reading whilst waiting for the next Dresden installment.

In this book Castor, who's taking a long sabatical from being an exorcist after failing to help a friend, is persuaded to take an exorcist job, helping an archive to get rid of a ghost that has become violent. Of course, things aren't as easy as they first appear. Entertaining and a quick read.

I've finished Farthing by Jo Walton (which is excellent) and starting the next book in the series, Ha'penny.

A question for our English members: How is "ha'penny" pronounced?

I generally like YA novels as well, but this one was a bit too much of the love angst of the main characters. Still worth the read, but I thought a bit of a break would help. I'll return after the Elizabeth Moon.
