Other People's Skeletons, fifth book in Rebecca Schwartz Series by Julie Smith is free

http://www.amazon.com/Other-Peoples-.../dp/B00BLYB22O

Quote:
What she’s about to learn will rock her world!

Rebecca Schwartz, “Jewish feminist lawyer,” as she’s fond of saying, thought she knew her best friend--and her boy friend. Not to mention her family. But everything’s about to change.

Secrets spill out of these pages like hornets out of a nest, each with its own distinct sting, as author Smith weaves a thrill-packed and complicated mystery that’s as much about how little we know about our nearest and dearest as it is about whodunit.

Rebecca’s shocked when Chris Nicholson, her glamorous law partner, is arrested for murder--but not nearly so shocked as when she discovers Chris can’t come up with an alibi. What she was doing, Chris says, involves a secret so damaging she’d be drummed out of San Francisco legal circles if anyone knew. All she’ll say is what her secret isn’t--crime, drugs, sex, alcohol, addiction, illness (mental or otherwise), or an eating disorder. So what’s left? Sure enough, when Rebecca uncovers it, her world tilts on its axis—and continues to list, ever more dangerously, as the story picks up speed and this formerly rational lawyer finds her worldview threatened by things she never knew existed. At least not in her circle! And Chris is far from the only one with a skeleton in her closet.

The murdered man, Jason McKendrick, was a much-loved columnist, a carefree bachelor with a million glamorous women, who also happened to have a very special friend who slept on a filthy mattress in his apartment. As Rebecca and Chris peel back the layers of Jason’s complicated world, they find he was leading not just a double life, but maybe many more. Only one person knows what made him tick. But can she stay alive long enough to tell his story?

I picked this up when it was free in 2012 and haven't read it yet. This is book 1 of the Victorian San Francisco Mysteries. If you have read this, please let me know what you thought about it.

Maids of Misfortune: A Victorian San Francisco Mystery [Cozy Historical Mystery]
M. Louisa Locke

Spoiler:
Quote:
It's the summer of 1879, and Annie Fuller, a young San Francisco widow, is in trouble. Annie's husband squandered her fortune before committing suicide five years earlier, and one of his creditors is now threatening to take the boardinghouse she owns to pay off a debt.

Annie Fuller also has a secret. She supplements her income by giving domestic and business advice as Madam Sibyl, one of San Francisco's most exclusive clairvoyants, and one of Madam Sibyl's clients, Matthew Voss, has died. The police believe his death was suicide brought upon by bankruptcy, but Annie believes Voss has been murdered and that his assets have been stolen.

Nate Dawson has a problem. As the Voss family lawyer, he would love to believe that Matthew Voss didn't leave his grieving family destitute. But that would mean working with Annie Fuller, a woman who alternatively attracts and infuriates him as she shatters every notion he ever had of proper ladylike behavior.

Sparks fly as Anne and Nate pursue the truth about the murder of Matthew Voss in this light-hearted, cozy historical mystery set in the foggy gas-lit world of Victorian San Francisco. Maids of Misfortune is the first book in M. Louisa Locke's historical mystery series, the sequel is Uneasy Spirits, and there are currently two short stories based on the characters from the novels, Dandy Detects, and The Misses Moffet Mend a Marriage.

I read this last year and particularly enjoyed the historical detail. It seemed to me to be accurate. I have an 1872 San Francisco directory that I've studied since childhood and have always been fascinated by that era. The author, a history professor, stayed faithful to the era with no modern intrusions.

There is a chaste romance and a mystery that kept my attention, although I no longer remember the details. I guess that I liked it, but didn't particularly love it since I never read the next in the series.

Thanks.

I had also picked up Dandy Detects and Uneasy Spirits when they were free. So, I'll move it up on my TBR list.

If any of you like Lyn Hamilton, two of her old titles are now in ebook: The Etruscan Chimera (Amazon and Smashwords) and The African Quest (Amazon, Smashwords and Kobo) at 3,99$. The Xibalba Murders is still 1.99$

The Dunn Deal by Catherine Leggitt (A Christine Sterling Mystery #2)

Quote:
Rumors of dirty cops, midnight meetings on Friday the thirteenth, and a forested militia masquerading as a religious cult – these and other peculiar elements complicate the senseless murder of Deputy Sheriff Baxter Dunn, son-in-law of Christine Sterling’s best friend and mentor Zora Jane Callahan.

The subject may be frightful, but amateur sleuth Christine Sterling tackles it with her characteristic blend of snoopiness and tenacity, especially after Molly, her beloved border collie, is dog napped in retaliation for Christine’s intrusion into matters that are none of her business.

National media attention fuels the escalating conflict between Christine and the authorities. Constance Boyd, a renowned newswoman, arrives to launch her own inquiry into the murder. When she crosses paths with Zora Jane, a strong Christian with a heart for spreading the Gospel, she is confronted with Truth. Zora Jane challenges postmodern humanistic beliefs using scripture. But Miss Boyd clings to her perverted “religion.”

Suspicions develop concerning which of the lawmen can be trusted, if any. Truth is challenged on every side. When a second murder jolts the tranquil community, Christine gets tagged as the prime suspect. Who will rescue Molly if Christine ends up behind bars?

Lesley Cookman - Murder in Steeple Martin (Libby Sarjeant Murder Mystery Series 01)

Quote:
First in a series of British murder mysteries featuring retired middle-aged actress and sleuth, Libby Sarjeant.

Artist and ex-actress Libby Sarjeant is busy directing a play for the opening of a new theatre in her village when one of her cast is found murdered. The play, written by her friend Peter, is based on real events in his family, disturbing and mysterious, which took place in the village during the last war. As the investigation into the murder begins to uncover a tangled web of relationships in the village, it seems that the events dramatised in the play still cast a long shadow, dark enough to inspire murder.

Libby s natural nosiness soon leads her into the thick of the investigation, but is she too close to Peter s family, and in particular his cousin Ben, to be able to recognise the murderer?
