I read to use it in personal way was an insult due to the nature of it being used in the context of say here where I live a guy would say to a woman walking down the street. "Hey Pretty mama where are you goin'?" Some Spanish speaking people here used Mamacita like that.

Now KA used Mamita in a personal way in RC7. Hector calls the heroine that like a nickname.

Like I said it can be kind of confusing if the author doesn't explain how she sees the use of that word.
I live in Puerto Rico (Caribbean) and here like you said "mamacita" is a cat call and generally considered rude. "Mama" or "mamita" on the other hand is more of an endearment.

Thank you for clearing that up! When a author uses Spanish words it's hard to know the true meaning unless they explain in their writing some do and some don't.

This is really interesting, because I live in the western US where most people with a Hispanic background are either Mexican or Central American. Here, mamacita is often not rude. In fact, it's not unusual to hear a mother referred to as mamacita by her family. In slang young guys sometimes also refer to a sexy woman as a mamacita but not really as a cat call.

I guess it's not enough to translate the word, you've also got to take into account the culture it's being used in. In Perfect Chemistry, I think the male lead is Puerto Rican, but I would have passed right over the probable usage of that word as a cat call since I was reading it with a Mexican context.

That is always the case, any time you translate something. The word itself is less important than the message it conveys. If you as a translator have to chose, you are supposed to translate the message, not the literal meaning.

Here if a guy calls a girl "mamacita" she'll propably stare at him, besides being considered rude it's not common to hear it. The more common:"Vaya mami!" will get a giggle and a smile. Meaning "wow you're hot!"

ETA: You won't hear a Puertorrican say "mamacita" unless he or she spends lots of time with Mexicans. Like Teresa said it's more a Mexican thing.

Once again, I honestly think that what is said in public and how it is said between two people when they are alone, can mean very different things...

And my point is this: If the author of a book means a certain term as an endearment when the hero uses it when speaking to the heroine, then just accept it as such and move on.

Don't let the meaning of that term in the context you live in bias you to the point that you can't understand the author meant it in any other way. Just because you wouldn't accept that term as a compliment if someone said it to you doesn't mean the author meant it that way.

I agree with this. Same thing goes for terms and attitudes that while not PC are historically accurate. For example the N-word, personally it doesn't bother me, but I've seen reviews in GR for Historical romances where people didn't finish a book or gave a low rating because a character used it. They don't take into consideration that it's historically accurate.

Just picked this one up as I have read Joan Swan and loved her style of writing.

$2.99 ($1.50 @ Kobo with 50% off coupon)
Reckless by Skye Jordan (Joan Swan) Kindle Link

Quote:
A couture wedding dress designer to the rich and famous, Lexi LaCroix's image means everything. Raised on the wrong side of the tracks, her years of polish and hard work are finally about to pay off. But crossing paths with a sexier-than-sin, bad-boy biker who makes her realize how much living she's sacrificed for her success, one touch is all it takes to threaten her carefully choreographed life.

Jax Chamberlin has been screwed over by gorgeous gold-diggers one too many times. Though he runs his own stunt company, all of America knows his Hollywood face even years after he's given up acting. Finding a woman who doesn't plan to use him as a stepping stone to success is virtually impossible, so when the charming and mysterious Lexi offers him a chance at a totally anonymous hook-up during an out of town trip, Jax accepts. Only Lexi is more sextacular than charming, and Jax wants more. Lots more.

But Lexi's got a major hang-up over his renegade lifestyle. And if she finds out his connections could catapult her to the top of her career, he's afraid the fantasy woman he's falling for might just end up like all the rest.

Warning: This novel contains uber-hot sexual encounters. For safety's sake, read along with pitcher of ice-water. Or...wine..

Will add to my list to buy tomorrow. There are three other books which come out today I plan to get, but some tomorrow, too. And I want to read today

What's odd is I still get the old Kobo in this browser (IE9), but when I clicked on your link it took me to the new. If I click on my favorites link I do still get the old. I confess I am clinging to the older version for as long as it will let me
