That approach tends to tell me that the book was NOT DRM'ed in the first place (the Kobo kepub scheme is not compatible with any other DRM scheme.

Nope ... the problem is getting it into Calibre, because Calibre doesn't accept kepub files.

I've just bought two books and in both cases Amazon was much cheaper, one book was almost half price in Amazon. Kobo wanted £3.95 and Amazon £2.47

Yes I saved a tiny bit of money using the kobo voucher but far less than 50%

Thought this would be the perfect chance to grab a couple more books from two of my favourite series (Harry Hole, Jack Reacher), so it's just typical neither of them are eligible for the discount!

Maybe change your country in your kobo account till you find acountry that has it discountable.

Yes the saving isn't quite as much as 50% but I'd still have bought the two books I was planning on buying, if only they'd been eligible for the discount (both £4.49 from Kobo, but they are £3.56 & £3.38 on Amazon).

Speaking of which, there are two versions of one of the books on Kobo (Jo Nesbo - The Bat). One translated by Don Bartlett who has done the other Hole books. The other one is slightly cheaper (and is eligible for the discount) but it's been translated by a different person, who is also listed as the publisher. Is that someone doing it unofficially?

Hubby bought two, I bought three, but i'd have bought a few more but pre orders aren't eligable. I can't believe how much more expensive the books are on KOBO though.

Is there a clear way to know if there is an EPUB version? I also have not yet purchased a book from Kobo, and I'm only interested if I can get an EPUB.

I've bought 6 today and they have all been ePub, one was even DRM free, the others showed as Adobe ePub. I live in the UK and bought from the UK site

I just took a look again and unfortunately you can't see exactly what format it is until after you've bought it. I've been lucky so far and only seen ePub, not kpub, so not sure what would happen the day I see that as I don't have a Kobo reader.

I know

... I only buy with coupons there, and very rarely, because I almost always end up getting a better price somewhere else (that does not mind me living in Europe and does not think it should charge me 30% more just because of that). Kobo is probably good for Canadians, they seem to just love it, but between the horrible softwares and the overpriced books, I just don't get it.

Yeah, I've been noticing that too. Several books on my wish list are $9.99 at Diesel and $11.99 at Kobo. With the 50% off coupon, Kobo is still cheaper, but not as cheap as I'd like.

It goes the other way too though. Some of the books I have bought were already 10-20% cheaper at Kobo than Amazon, so an extra 50% turns it into a 55-60% discount on the Amazon price.
