Oh yes, I am affected in the same way. Much more insomnia with the Fire or Nexus 7 vs the Paperwhite (dimmed).

But maybe some people are especially sensitive to the light spectrum. Sunlight early in the morning is helpful. I also have a "happy light" in my office.

The Gunnar glasses look very interesting. Need more $$ though before I can even consider ordering a pair.

Sydney is 15, a normal insolent teenager. But I didn't get married until I was 40, and it took some time after that.

(I assume everyone on MobileREAD can also add)

I used to be ok with my insomnia...not happy mind you, but at least I would be able to get a few extra things done while my daughter slept and both our schoolwork was done. but now it's not as useful. I lay there staring at dark walls because I am trying to be "a big girl" and go to sleep because I know that work comes in the morning no matter what and I should at least try to be awake when I get there. so nothing extra ever gets done anymore

Thanks! The Tooks are half the price of the sleepphones. I think I'll try one. I'll try using it with my old cell phone. I wouldn't want to worry about ruining my current one when I toss and turn too much.

I too experience insomnia from late reading with the Fire HD (or watching movies on it late at night), as well as having morning wake-up migraines triggered. I can only read on E-Ink screens, or on the PW after about 7 pm or so. And have to watch movies on the fire HD in the afternoons.

N.B. I too am a night owl with a long history of bouts of insomnia - in my grad school days I was awake until 3 am and then slept in until 10:00 am or so -- it was the perfect sleep/wake cycle for maximum productivity and mental clarity- I think I wrote my dissertation between 9 pm and 2 am.

I readjusted to "normal" sleep/wake cycles when I left grad school (to bed at 11:00 pm and up at 6:00 am) fairly successfully, but now (reaching my late 50's) I'm slipping back into my night owl mode - I'm awake & alert well past midnight, either can't fall asleep until around 3:00, or fall asleep and wake up at 3:00 wide awake. It's not pleasant at work in the mornings ..... Haven't resorted to meds yet. So I will be sticking with the PW for reading.

It's all about the light color and how much it is shining directly into your eyes. In addition to dimming screen brightness as much as possible I use an app on my PC and a CynogenMod setting on my smartphone to lower the color temperature to 3700K (giving everything a red tinge) and that definitely helps. My nighstand lamp also uses a bulb with warmer light color. Imho blue light frequencies shining directly into your eyes are the main culprit in scree-related sleep delay/hindrance.

I wish I had a Paperwhite, as my nightstand lamp is way brighter than I'd need to still be able to read on my Kindle Touch …

Good it looks like something you'd like. IIRC there are two different texture types, so read carefully. For me, some textures give me the willies

I do like the Sansa Clip for overnight audiobooks. It clips to my gown so I don't have to worry about it falling off the bed with all my tossing and turning.

People who play sound through their headphones while asleep should be careful not to increase the likelihood of their acquiring tinnitus. When it comes to headphones, hearing loss is not simply a matter of the volume at which you listen. It is also a matter of how long.

If you use your headphones during the day, then try not to set your headphones to play continuously while you're asleep. You'll be risking hearing loss to play sound you're not even hearing yourself.

I understand. Although I heard somewhere the worst thing to do is to think "I have to sleep because... etc" Sometimes I want a nap in the afternoon and then I cannot sleep because I think I HAVE to fall asleep soon otherwise what little time I have will be gone. Then I'm stressed out and cannot sleep. So a while ago I decided to say to myself "fine, I am just lying down and relaxing, I don't care, I am not going to sleep" and that actually works. When there are nights when I cannot sleep I read until I drop dead regardless of work next day. Tough luck, I'll be dead at work, been there and done that.

So maybe you shouldn't be a big girl, just say to insomnia, fine, I don't care!

That's what I use too. When it was lost I used my cell phone. It worked, but for me, the clip wins for use in bed. I still might use my cell during the day but it's easy enough to FF to where I need to be on either Clip or cell.

The solution is of course simple. If you know that you'll fall asleep within the hour, then use a one hour playlist, or a one hour sleep function (available on many MP3 players).

One of the reasons I need to listen to music all night is because the ringing in my ears is so loud already. When I wake up in the middle of the night and the music has stopped I can't get back to sleep because the ringing sound is so annoying. My tinnitus got worse from aspirin and advil. I normally don't use headphones much at all, and keep the volume low when I do.

I always set mine for as short as I think will work. I also only use one ear bud and change which ear I use it in. I sleep on my side and only one ear bud is needed.

Even during the day, I frequently can use only one ear bud if the ambient noise level isn't too loud. I also keep the volume as low as possible. Hearing is so important, I would hate to lose it. (Don't get me started on a rant about LOUD music! LOL)
