Question Need Help with a Nook

I am creating new covers for some e-books using the Generate Cover plug-in. It works great but I'm having a problem with the Nook Simple Touch. I would like the new covers to show up on the Library shelves of the Nook. And they do, usually.

But sometimes when I save the new book using exactly the same title as the old book, the Nook displays the old cover image on the shelf. The new cover shows up just fine when you open the book, but somehow the device is remembering the old cover image and using it on that Library display.

This happens after I edit the metadata, convert the e-book in caliber, and even delete the old book from the Nook. Now, if I save the new book with a title even slightly different than the original, the new book saves and displays just fine. But if I then go back into the Nook's files and re-name that book to the old title, shazam, there's that old, nasty cover image back again on the Nook Library shelf. And I very much would like to use the same title to keep my files straight.

Are there any Nook savants out there that can help me learn how to delete these old cover images?

Many thanks in advance!

Did you try totally deleting the old book first?

I can't speak for the Nook, but on my Kindle this is not unusual. When it happens, if I do a restart after deleting the book it clears whatever cache memory the cover seems to be hiding in...good luck!

Thanks for the quick response!

Yep. I deleted the book, ejected the Nook to verify the files did not show up, then re-connected the Nook to the computer and copied the new book onto the memory card.

The device must be saving that original cover image somewhere, and associating it with the original title, no matter what the file contains.

Thanks, Sharks. I was thinking about that. I will try it and let you know.

You got it in one, Sharks! My covers are all where they should be after a restart. I so seldom power the device down that I almost forget that it has a power button! Now I have a good reason to use it.

Many thanks!

The nook puts the Thumbnail copies of the cover in a hidden folder called .docThumbs on the sdcard and in the Nook dir for side-loaded ebooks.

Hi Bernie! Yes, I found those. The images go in and never leave! Potentially embarrassing under certain circumstances!

I had side loaded a good many books on the Nook before buying a memory card for it. At that point I moved those books to the card, but I only just now cleaned out those images from the Nook's internal memory. They took up more space than I expected! I dumped 119 images and freed up 31MB! Can that be right? The Nook's available storage went from 79% to 92%!!!

So anyone who side-loads books and then deletes them when they've been read should definitely clean out those .docThumbs files every now and then.
