Anyone thinking of doing a 'trade-in' on anything?

I was actually thinking of trading in my recently acquired Kindle DX-G, as it appears I can get $141.75 for it. (I paid $142 for it about 3 weeks ago.)

Too, I was thinking of trading in my Kindle paperwhite wifi (first generation, of course) for $84.

I would then use the proceeds to purchase the Kindle paperwhite (second generation) 3g.

Anyone else thinking of doing this?

Has anyone any experiences with having done this before?

I briefly considered it, but the prices they list on the USA site were rather wonky. We have a fairly new thread here about the strange pricing that seems to be questionable. For example, they were listing SO units with a higher trade in value than non-SO units. I decided to hold off. I'll probably just use the MR Flea Market if/when I sell my Kindle Touch.

I will definitely trade in my K1 (which will only be about $9) if I get a PW2. The major question is whether I will keep my K3 or trade it in? I think I would get about $45 for it. Better now than later when it has no value. But do I want to keep it as a back-up or a loaner? I loaned out my K1 to a friend, but I think she has only used it twice in the last 3 years or so. So keeping a loaner might not be worth it.

I've pre-ordered a PW2 so I was going to trade in both my K3 and 1st gen Fire but now I'm hedging on getting rid of the K3 (the Fire can go, I got a Nook HD+ and installed the Kindle app on it). I hear mixed things about the Amazon trade in program so I have yet to do anything.

I would consider trading in my first gen Fire. I would have to know more about the trade-in program, though.

Looks like you can now get up to $150 for the DXG.

I am not sure what I'll do.

I've got Sonys and Nooks and have given no thought to trading them in. First, I like them and see no reason to buy the newest generation when the older generation fulfills my needs. I just want to be able to read. It is not like ebooks have suddenly gotten new and desirable features that are only accessible on new-generation devices.

But if I were going to buy replacement devices, I would not trade-in my old devices. I would take them to my local library or to a shelter for abused people or some other appropriate charity and ask them if they would like the device to give to a client. It's not that I'm wealthy, it's that I can afford what some others cannot and so prefer to share a little.

That is what I do with my computers, which I replace every 18-24 months -- I take the old ones, which still work very well (no broken or dying parts) and offer them through local school contacts to a needy child/family. Because they are custom built, the guy who builds them for me would buy them back at pretty good prices because he can resell them, but I'd rather give them to someone who couldn't otherwise get one.

The problem for any kind of trade-in option is the shipping to the U.S., which will eat away at that savings.

It won't be until Christmas before I go back. Something tells me that the demand/price ratio for these trade-in units will drop precipitously if I wait until the new Readers come out.

Does Amazon make out-of-country customers pay for postage on trade-ins? I shipped off an enormous box of used DVDs to Amazon's trade-in program this week, and was provided with a postage-paid label to affix to the package. Made things much easier for me; I didn't have to worry about standing in line at the post office or eating what little profit I was making.

That's a good question.

I realized that in the U.S. that the shipping is free.

I assumed that shipments made to the U.S. would not be free. I could be wrong, however.....

Have you thought of selling it locally? I would think a DX might have a higher value in a country where it is difficult to purchase.

The trade in only works on Amazon.com, the rest of us have to make do with ebay, or selling here.

I submitted my Paperwhite trade last night. $95 estimated value. I had the SO kindle and paid $20 to get rid of the ads, boxed it up and sent it in today (the SO mint condition was $45, non SO $95 so it made sense to pay the $20 to get rid of the ads).

It's in pristine condition. We shall see what the offer comes back as. I'm confident it will be $95 or close to it. Fingers crossed.
