John Lennon: The Life by Philip Norman is on sale for $1.99 at Amazon | Kobo | B&N | OmniLit | Sony
Quote:
For more than a quarter century, Philip Norman's internationally bestselling Shout! has been unchallenged as the definitive biography of the Beatles. Now, at last, Norman turns his formidable talent to the Beatle for whom belonging to the world's most beloved pop group was never enough. Drawing on previously untapped sources, and with unprecedented access to all the major characters, here is the comprehensive and most revealing portrait of John Lennon that is ever likely to be published.

This masterly biography takes a fresh and penetrating look at every aspect of Lennon's much-chronicled life, including the songs that have turned him, posthumously, into a near-secular saint. In three years of research, Norman has turned up an extraordinary amount of new information about even the best-known episodes of Lennon folklore--his upbringing by his strict Aunt Mimi; his allegedly wasted school and student days; the evolution of his peerless creative partnership with Paul McCartney; his Beatle-busting love affair with a Japanese performance artist; his forays into painting and literature; his experiments with Transcendental Meditation, primal scream therapy, and drugs. The book's numerous key informants and interviewees include Sir Paul McCartney, Sir George Martin, Sean Lennon--whose moving reminiscence reveals his father as never before--and Yoko Ono, who speaks with sometimes shocking candor about the inner workings of her marriage to John.

Honest and unflinching, as John himself would wish, Norman gives us the whole man in all his endless contradictions--tough and cynical, hilariously funny but also naive, vulnerable and insecure--and reveals how the mother who gave him away as a toddler haunted his mind and his music for the rest of his days.

This Explains Everything: 150 Deep, Beautiful, and Elegant Theories of How the World Works by John Brockman is $1.99: amazon B&N Kobo feedbooks

Quote:

In This Explains Everything, John Brockman, founder and publisher of Edge.org, asked experts in numerous fields and disciplines to come up with their favorite explanations for everyday occurrences. Why do we recognize patterns? Is there such a thing as positive stress? Are we genetically programmed to be in conflict with each other? Those are just some of the 150 questions that the world's best scientific minds answer with elegant simplicity.

With contributions from Jared Diamond, Richard Dawkins, Nassim Taleb, Brian Eno, Steven Pinker, and more, everything is explained in fun, uncomplicated terms that make the most complex concepts easy to comprehend.

The Man Called CASH: The Life, Love and Faith of an American Legend
by Steve Turner

is today's Nook Daily Find. It can be downloaded for $1.99

http://www.barnesandnoble.com/w/man-...=9781418578091

Below is the blurb:
Johnny Cash is one of the most influential figures in music and American popular culture today. While he was an icon to people of all ages during his life, Cash's legacy continues after his death. His remarkable story is captured in this exclusive authorized biography, addressing the whole life of Johnny Cash-not just his unforgettable music but also his relationship with June Carter Cash and his faith in Christ. His authenticity, love for God and family, and unassuming persona are what Steve Turner captures with passion and focus in this inspiring book.

Different from other books written about him, The Man Called CASH brings Cash's faith and love for God into the foreground and tells the story of a man redeemed, without watering-down or sugar-coating. Unquestionably one of the biggest book releases of 2004, The Man Called CASH will be a huge success with his millions of fans and will draw in many new fans with this inspiring story of faith and redemption.

Currently showing up free on Amazon by Rosalind Wiseman, whose book Queen Bees and Wannabes was the basis for Tina Fey's film Mean Girls, and who has a new book out for parents of boys called Masterminds and Wingmen: Helping Our Boys Cope with Schoolyard Power, Locker-Room Tests, Girlfriends, and the New Rules of Boy World. I'm assuming the free book below is being offered in conjunction with the Wingmen book above. Don't know how long this will be free. While Wingmen is written for parents, the free one below is written for kids.

The Guide: Managing Douchebags, Recruiting Wingmen, and Attracting Who You Want by Rosaline Wiseman Amazon US

Recognizing that boys’ issues and problems have too long been ignored, Rosalind (a mother of two boys), decided to pull back the curtain on “Guy World”, working collaboratively with middle-school and high-school boys for a period of two years to chart the emotional terrain that boys inhabit. But as she was working on her book for the boys’ parents, Rosalind realized that teenage boys themselves are in desperate need of guidance. They need a book, The Guide, that speaks directly to them (in a boy-friendly format and in their language) about the problems they face every day:

How do you get out of the friendzone (where girls refuse to take you seriously)?
What’s the right way to react when getting made fun of?
How do you talk to your parents so that they’ll actually listen?

With the help of hundreds of middle and high school aged boys, Rosalind has identified and answered the most pressing questions teenage boys have. The result is an invaluable e-book guide that no teenage boy should be without.

newer edition, also free:

http://www.amazon.com/The-Guide-Recr...dp/B00F548TXQ/

Apparently yet another self-published author that can't figure out how to update their book files on the KDP website.

ETA: Note that the "new" version also has a slightly different name: The Guide: Managing Jerks, Recruiting Wingmen, and Attracting Who You Want

The second version is quite a bit larger in file size.

The original, with Douchebag in the title, is also free and B&N

What's odd is that her main books are published by Random House, so I would imagine these are part of a marketing campaign rather than the usual self-pub author mistakes.

The Indifferent Stars Above by Daniel Brown. $1.99 everywhere [Harpercollins]

http://www.amazon.com/The-Indifferen...ifferent+stars

Quote:
he story of the ill-fated Donner party, a group of nineteenth-century settlers en route to California who became snowbound in the Sierra Nevada mountains and resorted to cannibalism to survive, remains an iconic moment in American history. Given the story’s inherent elements of horror and heroism, it is surprising that this account, told from the point of view of a young bride who survived the tragedy, is finally such an uninteresting book. Part of the problem is the author’s inability of incorporate his copious background material into the flow of the narrative (readers probably don’t need to know about 1840s-era birth-control methods). Even the author’s treatment of the tragedy itself, however, feels dully reportorial, without any of the you-are-there drama that Piers Paul Reid brough to Alive!, his account of history’s second-most-famous cannibalism-survival story, concerning the famous 1972 airplane crash in the Andes. So why bother with this Donner party treatment when so many other, more compelling works exist? The premise itself sets this book apart, and while it’s not handled particularly effectively, it will still interest those fascinated by the subject.

The Dog Who Came to Stay by Hal Borland. $1.99 everywhere [Open Road republished]

Quote:
The rib-thin, black-and-white rabbit hound turned up at Hal Borland's Connecticut farm one Christmas night in the middle of a nasty winter storm. Pat, as the dog came to be known, and his raffish travelling companion, a young pup, "were even more unwelcome than the weather," but after a few preliminaries both settled in as members of the Borland household. The pup eventually found his permanent home elsewhere, but Pat became Hal Borland's true companion - and a local legend, the terror of woodchucks for miles around. With his keen sensitivity to the natural world, Borland here recounts, with deep affection and wonder, how a man and his dog can form a magical and unforgettable partnership. First published in 1961, THE DOG WHO CAME TO STAY "will appeal to many sportsmen and to all people who have ever been closely attached to a dog." (The New York Times Book Review)
