One of my most favorite books, movies, and audiobooks is The Exorcist. I've read the novel a few times, seen the movie at least a dozen times, and I picked up the audiobook, read by the author, as one of my first audiobooks a couple of years ago. William Peter Blatty is an excellent narrator.

Audio books put me to sleep, which isn't necessarily a bad thing. If I am in a situation that requires I stay awake, like the gym, my mind wanders and I lose track of the book. It does make the gym go by faster and more pleasantly, but often I don't absorb more than a few words. It is better on the stationary bike thing, sometimes I absorb 20 pages or so
![]() So while I find them pleasant, it would probably take me weeks to actually listen to a book and feel that I have absorbed it in some way. Helen |

Never made it more than 10minutes into an audio book before I just couldn't stand it and I quit and went and read the book.
Audiobooks just don't work for me. Which I kind of regret... |

Same here. I've listened to some favorites that I'd read multiple times and still usually come away with something new/different after experiencing the audio version.
I don't buy a ton of books in audio that I've already read in paper or digital, but I do do it for favorites, especially series favorites. An example would be the Liaden series. Last edited by AnemicOak; 09-11-2013 at 08:37 PM. |

I have trouble with audio books. I've tried them but all too often I get distracted and find pages have gone by without me actually having heard them. I just don't seem to have the focus that I have with print. With print books I tune out the world to such an extent that I often need to be rapped on the head before I hear someone talking to me.

Yes, especially if the narrators were Tavia Gilbert or Lorelei King and the book in one of my favorite genres.

I had a few false starts with audiobooks as well. This might sound counter-intuitive, but once I discovered smart phone apps where you can fine tune the playback speed, I was actually able to focus and digest the story easier and so that's when audiobooks became appealing to me. You can adjust speeds on ipods as well but there are so few options that every setting is too fast or too slow. It's great for me to play audiobooks on my phone because I don't have as much time as I'd like to sit and read, so I can be at the gym, cleaning the basement, mowing the lawn, etc. and still be "reading". So I would suggest that, if you're interested. Smart Audiobook player is the best Android audiobook player - I've tried them all. |

Thanks for recommending this, as I've been looking for an Android app. I did download Akimbo the other day but haven't tried it out yet. |

![]() The developer is very responsive to questions and requests, and the app is updated regularly. My wife and I have both settled on that one. ApK |

Listen has the same type of multi-part book management, and it's addressed all the issues I had with MortPlayer. |

Thanks for the recommendations for player apps. I only need something to play mp3 files, and as an occasional backup to my Sansa Clip Zip. It seems like any of these would work fine for my needs.

I use the Ambling Pro app on my iPhone. I love the sleep timer, and the shake to reset timer option. I use these every night when trying to fall asleep.

I voted "yes" because I use audiobooks a lot for rereading these days. I love listening to my favorite books and if I listen instead of reading, I don't get the feeling that I should rather read a book that is new to me as I usually listen when I am unable to read (for example while doing household chores etc.).
