I don't have a Kindle Fire but I do have a PaperWhite and haven't noticed that it keeps me awake. An LCD screen has been compared to a flashlight shining in your eyes though and the PaperWhite screen uses an indirect light source rather than being shone directly in eyes so I'd guess it is better in that way. And doesn't lead to eye strain as much either.

Might want to invest in these... I use them when listening to my audiobooks, my husband says they don't disturb him. I find them very comfortable to wear in bed...

I have a similar pair and a hat for the winter that I can switch the inner headphones into.very comfortable but given my level of insomnia and tossing and turning, I'm scared I'd turn over and fling my phone our ipod clear across the room or not wake to my alarm in the morning lol

ETA...found the link to the brand I have (Tooks)

I work night shifts and I use reading to help myself get to sleep at weird times it doesn't bother me to much if I'm reading from my Nexus 7 or my Sony T1 I do however use an app called LUX on the Nexus that can really lower the brightness and has a night mode I believe help cuts out the blue light it also has an astronomer mode that cuts all white light but everything looks red I believe the real use for this is for people who want to keep their night vision.

I do believe light is extremely important when it comes to sleep I also use a sunlight lamp to help set my sleep cycles given my weird times, to do this I simply turn it on at the times I want to begin waking and I really believe it to reset my body clock the real use for these lamps is for treating Seasonal Affectedness Disorder but I saw potential in them for helping me wake up naturally.

So basically I'm saying the LCD doesn't really effect me much but I do believe it has been heavily researched that blue light in particular can reset your body clock and also can play havoc with sleep cycles the plus point is you can also use the same effect to sleep better.

One of the things I actually hate is waking up. It seems that there is some sort of manufacturer agreement to make all alarm clocks into torture devices.

another thought I had reading this thread through is has anyone tried Gunnar Glasses for reading on tablets or monitors I've thought about ordering a pair a few times myself for their blue light filtering and anti glare properties.

Really they are designed for gamers to reduce eye strain but it's another thing that caught my interest when I was thinking about how to sort my body clock.

I'm curious if they help or not although I do suspect any glasses with the right filters would probably work just as well.

Ha, not with my 5 year old. He jumps on my bed around 7.30 or 8.00 at weekends. I enjoy it because one day he will stop and I will miss it. But then dad and him go downstairs and let me sleep till 10.30 (still too short)

I would also go to bed at 3 and wake up at 1 PM if I could. I actually did read till 3 am form Tuesday to Wednesday this week. I am permanently tired nowadays. And as soon as any holiday comes I immediately switch to night mode. I wouldn't call myself insomniac, I'm just a genuine night owl who enjoys evening and nights. What a waste to go to bed at 11 PM! Evening and night is the time when you cool down, enjoy peace and read with clear mind.

And there was a time when I put Star Wars episode IV to fall asleep with, and was not in the least bothered with the noise (that was long time before ereaders and tablets)

I have this picture over my desk at work

A very good point.

On a stock smartphone, the pleasure of reading is often interrupted by tasks which the smartphone's software brings to one's attention. Perhaps tablets are less like that (or perhaps your tablet's OS allows you to disable more automatic processes than my stock-OS'd phone does me).

I was just about to ask Crich a related question.

Have you compared reading your PW to reading a physical book at the brink of bedtime? I'd compare reading physical and e-copies of Madame Bovary myself if the necessary changes in lighting were unlikely to keep a certain someone awake.

Well, I use my phone (or sometimes laptop) for most messaging and suchlike, whereas my iPad is mainly for comics and a few games, which I have set not to interrupt me. iOS alerts are very customisable. I read a couple of novels on it recently just because some Netgalley publishers fail to make an epub available. I turned the brightness down very low, and the background to a sepia. Still kept me awake.

FWIW, my Glo doesn't seem to keep me awake any more than a paper book does. Certainly a few times I've tried and tried to stay awake with a captivating ebook, and failed!
