Kindle for Android is upgraded fairly regularly so I'm sure you get the same features as the new PW2. I have the original Note and whenever I travel by bus (shorter distances) I wont bring my Kindle but read on the Note. I think it works just fine and the N3 have even larger screen with better resolution so it should be just fine. Use the sepia background for less eye strain, adjust screen brightness and when reading in the dark use white text on dark background. With the N3 you get so much more functionality that the PW2.

What Kumabjorn said, though I wouldn't use the white on dark background when in the dark: in fact I'm not sure any of us should be reading in the dark if we cared about preserving our eyesight. Increased eyestrain is a factor in glaucoma after all.

I'm loving my Note 2. It makes a fine reader and it adjusts itself based on the amount of light that is available. I finally have an all in one machine for most situations.

Since you have to replace your phone anyway, I would get the note 3 and see if you like reading on it before purchasing the PW 2. Some people hate reading on backlit screens but others don't find it to be an issue. If you hate reading on the phone then pick up a PW.

What's the res on the note 3? High res helps a lot to reduce eye strain for some people.

As for battery life, that is what chargers are for. I have one at work and 3 here at home. Plug it in when I get home or at work and I'm good to go.
With my Note 2 I picked up 3 extra betteries & an external charger on eBay for $13. Although doubtful at first it turned out fine-and the extra batteries last longer. (4300 mAH vs 3100 mAH for the standard battery.) I carry a charged battery in my pocket, another in my car, and the 3rd is in the charger at home. I work from home so I don't need to worry about that & no matter where I go (except when I travel, then I take them all with me) I have a spare battery for when the one in the phone gets low. Takes about 1 minute to change the battery (30 seconds just to remove the stupid case-I've got to find a better one).

I enjoy reading on my Note 2. You can adjust the brightness in addition to the background colors to suit your needs. I've read on some pretty awful screen before. I read the entire Count of Monte Cristo on a 2" 240x240 Palm Pilot color.

But the best thing about it the Note 2 as an eReader is that it's always with me. It's always in my pocket and I can read anytime I feel inclined.

Since you already have PW1, I would choose the Samsung. Within 6 months or so, most new software features from PW2 will be ported to PW1 with a new firmware. They did that with Kindle Touch. They ported new software features from PW1 to Kindle Touch.

The Note 3's screen is now 5.7" and resolution is full HD or close-- 1080p, up from the Note 2's 720p; ppi is at 386. I think that's higher than many dedicated e-readers.

Besides, it's now got USB3.0 connectivity-- quicker sideloading via USB if your computer/laptop already has USB3.0; 3GB RAM and you'll get either a Snapdragon 800 or Exynos 5 Octa chipset for the CPU, which means it'll run really fast and smooth with the Android Jelly Bean system. Most importantly it's lighter by 15 grams and thinner than the Note 2-- I can see it being friendly to long reading sessions with those two factors.

As a former note 2 user it gets my vote as well. It is quite a formidable device with decent battery life, in fact one of the best batteries to run android.

What makes it even better is that it has a AMOLED display, so a black background actually really does use less juice, unlike with "normal" LCD displays where it makes no difference. The Note 3 costs more than I'm willing to shell out (or need: the Nexus 7 is the second best choice for reading on a non-eink device ), but if I were to look for a phoblet for reading, and battery life was a criterion (e.g. on the road a lot and not always near an outlet), that would be my choice. Just pricey.
