Exactly. All "volume license" means is that the same key can be used for multiple installs. So Cookie Monster, what you are suggesting would be a copyright violation unless you company pays for the license. I doubt they will do this for a private machine. Or, perhaps they have a way for you to reimburse them for the license since they do pay less per license (depending on total count) than a retail version would be.

Also, this is the only way to get a Vista Enterprise license.

Does anyone know where the Sony event is being held on Thursday? (Or maybe have an extra invite?) I'd love to attend if I can get on the list!!!

The location is a secret. Sony hasn't even told _me_ where it is, and I'm invited.

BTW, I doubt that you could get in. I think the location is size limited. We only received the one invite.

My employer does have a deal where we're allowed to install several applications (MS Office, among others) on privately owned machines -- the licensing agreement just has to take that into account, and we are required (in the legal sense) to remove the applications if we leave.

You're doubtless correct, however, that most employers might not want to offer that to their employees.

MobileRead staff got invited?

My respect for Sony just went up by an order of magnitude.

They have a long history of interest in MobileRead.

In fact they've told us on various occasions that they read the forum regularly, including comments to that effect directly from fairly high-level executives (VP & EVP types).

That is actually a standard part of the Office license... it is license per user which allows employees to install a copy at home as an extension of the work license.

That is not a part of the standard Windows license.

An example that wasn't a copyright violation is from when i worked in IT support in a school. The academic licence specifically allowed staff to install virtually any MS product, basically everything except server level stuff, at home. The school was only charged for the number of workstations on their premises.

If you have a copy of a corporate install dvd obtaining keys is a matter of running xxxxx xxxxx xxxx on a computer as it extracts all cd keys for MS products from your computer's registry.

If you don't have a valid licence then you are in breach of copyright laws. However, if you are covered by a licence there is nothing illegal with doing it.

[Moderator's Note -- I'm pretty sure that naming the tool to retrieve the installation keys is contrary to our policy on DRM, so I'm removing it. I just wanted to explain what was going on.]

Ah... but there is the kicker isn't it. I very much doubt a corporate MS license automatically covers every employees machine. To just assume this is the case and/or tell everyone it is, is irresponsible in my opinion.

Also, many companies do NOT have volume licensing or "select" licensing or any of those plans. They just buy an OEM license with each machine they purchase because they don't qualify for better rates.

I am sure an educational license is different. As is the MSDN subscription license which only allows installs of the OS for testing of products being developed.

I've a feeling that that has changed and is replaced by offering the "Home Use Program" which allows you to purchase Office for 25euro (approx).

Hmm... here is what the 2007 Professional license says:

a. Licensed Device. You may install and use one copy of the software
on the licensed device.
b. Portable Device. You may install another copy on a portable device
for use by the single primary user of the licensed device.

So, basically you are allowed to install it on your desktop AND on ONE laptop that you also use. But, Windows it self has no such provision. Which was my original point... you can't just install Windows XP in a VM on your Mac because you have a job.

Yeah.... if you want to purchase and install a version of windows on your computer. You are missing the point though; I don't want windows. Having dealt with it for years I have gotten fed up with it. I vastly prefer the Unix/Linux way of doing things. That means linux and/or Mac OSX (Or I suppose I could use one of the other free unix varients). I don't want to deal with Windows... not until they clean up their act and produce an OS that works properly.

So no, I am not planning on using Boot Camp, GRUB or any other utility to allow me to boot multiple OS's on my Mac. I want the software I use to support Macs and Linux (since I still have an old PC with linux installed).

Considering the fact that the PRS-505 has got an Epson controller and
that their new controller is supposed to be available en masse
in october, well... it isn't crazy to believe that sony is going to release
a new reader with this controller. And a PRS-505 with this new controller
and wireless support would be much better against the Kindle, don't you
think so?

No, the PRS-505 does NOT have the Epson controller (yet?). It uses E-Ink's Metronome.
