Personally, I like the night-mode. That could make the light more usable in a dark room.

That doesn't look too bad. I hate the night mode used by some iOS and Android apps because the dark area is too black and the text is too white resulting in my eyes seeing lines whenever I look away from the reader. In other words, the contrast is too great to be useful. But since eInk screens are more dark grey and light grey it might work without that effect. To see how a too contrasty screen looks, see this link: http://www.dpreview.com/. I have to change my browser color settings just to view it.

I haven't got a clue about the PW2, but I seem to recall another manufacturer had an eInk reader with night view option. Was it a Kobo or Nook? Or maybe I'm just senile, but I do seem to recall reading that. I hope the PW2 has it. I think it will work much better on an eInk screen than on an LCD screen due to less contrast. Funny, but with black text on white screen we need or want more contrast, but white text on a black screen works better with less contrast. For me anyway.

The Cybook Odyssey has it & IIRC some Onyx Boox devices too.

HEY GUYS. I was here last year for the great Color Blob Watch of 2012. (I recognize some names, hi jswinden and xendula.) I called it quits after three units at launch; then about two months ago I bought one at BB on a whim and it was blob free.

Needless to say I have a pre-order in for the new one. Hopefully we don't all experience severe déjà vu in a few weeks.

Yeah, right... The Kidney Paperwhite does not have "night mode". Troll harder!

That comparison was probably from a blog or some article that talked about the "Regal" waveform/wavelength, where the second gen (the one on the left, usually) performs a full page refresh 50% less often than the first gen (~9 pages instead of 6), feature which I probably won't use since I don't like ghosting at all and will set it to refresh after each page anyway.
