Yes.

There is nothing new in build 1.2 in regards to OSX. I think you need to lobby Apple to fully support MTP.

My knowledge of the in's and out's of MTP is very limited....Does this change have any impact on Calibre's support of MTP devices on Win XP?

The change is what it states in the What's New section.

  • MTP devices, such as Android tablets/phones: Allow ignoring any folder on the device, not just top level folders. For newly connected devices, also scan /Android/data/com.amazon.kindle for books by default (newer versions of the Kindle app place downloaded files there).
It is simply a new feature to scan the books directory if you use the Kindle for Android App.
