I am about 30 seconds away from pre-ordering the new PW. I'm considering trading in my K3 (Kindle Keyboard I guess it's called now) and my 1st Gen Fire for credit towards a new PW. Has anyone used the Amazon Trade-In program?

I haven't, but I sold my iPad 1 on Amazon when I bought my iPad 3, and it went very smoothly. If I remember correctly, trading it in would have given me much less money.

The higher screen resolution makes those "tiny letters" much crisper. You would definitely notice a difference between a higher resolution reader and your old 350.

Im not seeing the importance. I am sure there is a difference if I put them under a microscope, but there is no way that anyone is going to convince me that I will somehow benefit from a higher resolution text. I am nearsighted. When I take off my contacts or glasses I can get really close to the text on my ereader and see the text close up clearly. (as opposed to if I had my glasses or contacts on) It looks as good as a print book. Isnt the point of eink to mimick paper??

So I still feel that the Aura has more going for it. Most likely superior lighting, better software options(ie. two finger lighting slider, font sizes etc.) better ergonomic device(IMO), lighter, smaller bezel and the edge to edge screen. All these make it more appealing to be.

I suspect that's an issue with the white balance of the camera. If the camera was setting the white balance for indoor lighting, something producing white light would appear blue.

You can see that happening in the Slashgear video. You can watch the Paperwhite screen turn from white to blue as the paper on the table in the background turns from yellow to white, as the camera appears to auto-adjust its white balance.

Higher resolution may help with dynamic fonts but under certain circumstances, it may be counter productive with pictures.

The current generation of Kindle Paperwhite has approx 1024x768 resolution. Let's say the next generation ereader from Amazon has 1600x1200 resolution, same screen size. Consider you have an ebook with a picture, 1024x768 resolution. The picture would look better with the current generation than the next generation since with the next generation, the picture needs to be blown up from its native resolution of 1024x768 to 1600x1200. It wouldn't look pretty.

It looks like the Japanese model has 4GB storage instead of 2GB available elsewhere. How much storage does the old Japanese model have?

Assuming that the size of the screen is the same, and the scaling algorithm doesn't sacrifice quality for speed, then it will look roughly the same as with the lower resolution screen of the same size. Any actual loss of quality would be from scaling by a non-integer multiple... but filtering can help there.

However, the pixelation will be more obvious in comparison to higher resolution pictures and text. This makes the lower resolution jump out more and look out of place compared to a screen where everything is more pixelated from the lower resolution.

The old Japanese Paperwhite is the same hardware as the rest of the world (except for the janky 3G that only works inside Japan, for the 3G model). So it's 2GB.

Japanese book files are a little bit bigger than Roman-alphabet books (says calibre) so it looks like they tweaked things to compensate for that.

Cute they are not shipping to Canada yet again. I guess I have to wait six months again?

Should I be waiting for this PW2 has there been any reviews about how the lighting has been improved? I may go with the Kobo Aura if the wait is going to be very long for Canada once again.

I hope you all enjoy your units however, I look forward to how people feel about them once they have them in hand. It looks like I will have to wait or go with another brand.

If you are desperately struggling to put food on the table, get neither of them. If not then get the new model!

I've tried to look it up but can't find an answer, are those in Australia able to preorder it? If I have to wait a large amount of time to get it here I might just wait to get it when I go back to the US.

I went from a Kindle DX (which is 150 dpi) to an Aura HD at 265 dpi, and yes, that was very noticeable. But the difference between an 800x600 5" and a 1024x768 6" is far less (200 vs. 212 dpi)
