I doubt it. It would be hilarous if the academic world is searching high and low and back and forth to find these special, super-duper puttin'-on-the-ritz color seeing women, if you can just pluck a bunch of them (like 25 or so) right off of MobileRead. Hilarious indeed

Even so, seeing colors (or on the other hand, NOT seeing colors) can be trained. Since I started taking pictures in 2004, I've been working with a perfectly color calibrated and profiled computer monitor. That is close to 10 years now. When looking at something on a screen (any screen), and it has neutral parts in it (or I know it should have), I can pick up any color cast immediately and without fail.

10 years ago, I certainly couldn't, even to save my life.

I've said to people at work: "Your computer screen is set wrong. It's yellow/purple/blue/pink/whatever." The response invariably was: "You're crazy." And I was told I was crazy right up until the moment I put my screen (I color calibrated and profiled it myself, using my own profiler) right next to theirs. Then theirs *was* purple or whatever, and obviously so, even to them.

The Touch is an older, tan looking eInk screen with less resolution than the PW1. New FW won't help that at all. I want a PW w/o light because the light layer has been problematic, but if they fix that, which I doubt they will, then a lighted PW would be okay.

I'm kind of in the same boat. I have an Aura HD, but have used the light exactly twice. I had the PW1, but sent it back mainly because with the light turned down all the way (wish it could be turned off like the Kobo) something about the light layer made me feel I was reading through glass, like a picture frame. Now the Aura HD doesn't have that feel and reading on it with the light off is pretty much spot on to what I want (but I really prefer the Kindle software a lot).

Basically a Sony T3 with Amazon's software would be what I want.

What's also interesting is that these guys seem to prefer the new Kobo Aura. Isn't the Aura still using the older Pearl E Ink technology? Shouldn't its screen, which is the most important component of an eBook reader, be inferior to the new Paperwhite, which uses Carta?

Here is the hands-on video:

Probably because software wise the kobo outshines the kindle in almost every respect. Add to that the excellent edge to edge surface as well as the superior lighting system they used last year. Its not hard to see why.

Really when you think about it you are talking about resolution of tiny letters. Most people wont notice (or care about) the uptick in resolution of letters the kindle offers. Heck I still think my old 350 and 650 look great and even the older ones before look sharp enough for me to read. I really do not notice the much difference between generations of eink screens.

Yes, at least 3 of my replacements had wonky screens. The first of them would have been fine otherwise, I tried very hard to ignore it but I really couldn't.

When I was most of the way through these replacements, a friend brought her paperwhite round. she'd said it had no colour patches or shading and I thought she just couldn't see it, but she was quite right. We tried it in every light and it really was perfect!

Fascinating; what a shame there's no way of knowing the percentages of women versus men having 1+ replacements due to colour issues.

I noticed the color blobs on the video that is posted earlier from the Engadget hands on. My experience going through a few Paperwhite 1's is that some were worse than others. Since I do most of my reading in the dark it really bugged me.

Kobo is getting better...but bugs aside there are just more cool features on the aura IMO.

I found it impossible to put FW bugs aside on the Kobo Touch. Kobo does excellent hardware but their software just sucks and the harder they try to fix it the worse it becomes. On the Touch they used two rendering engines. One was for kePubs and it did a fair job. The other was for non-Kobo ePubs and it blew chunks, so to speak. Since I didn't buy any Kobo books, most of what I read on it looked horrible.

Thanks for the link.

Okay that is the second video review to clearly show a blue tint on the screen. Also if you look at the video at 0:59 seconds there is clearly ghosting within the popup window. As a photographer perhaps these things bother me more than other people are bothered by them, but they are clearly visible to me.

BTW, the PW1s I tried all had ghosting when ever a popup window was displayed, or more appropriately, when ever the popup disappeared. The lack of a page refresh really messed up the screen once a popup disappeared.

At :44 in the slash gear video, the new PW definitely has a much naturally lighter screen than the 1st PW with the front light down. I think the screen in general actually looks fairly good. Better contrast and the font seems to pop a bit more. Now I just need to see it once I get my pre-order.
