Thank you!
I worry that too often using a USB data cable will reduce the Kindle's life. In fact, I think too much. ![]() |

Even so, I know that some people just leave a short length micro-USB to USB cable plugged into the Kindle and then use a USB extension cable. For myself - I just leave the USB cable plugged into the Kindle, with USBnetwork running. That way I can transfer files, list files, and have telnet/ssh/scp access while the Kindle is in 'normal' use. |

keeping a usb cable permanently attached to the kindle doesn't work for me..
i cart it around between home and work.. and also read in bed.. (that's one of the original purposes, right? ![]() in fact, i prefer to handle gadgets in their original state.. without scratch guards, covers and other paraphernalia.. i keep my PW in a padded pouch.. ![]() but i suppose usb port wear out is an issue for those who do frequent transfers.. was just wondering.. would it be possible to make the "experimental" browser access thru wifi, a ftp server running on a PC connected to the same network..? |

It is just the USB networking cable that needs some TLC to make it the default route. I did not try to propose a solution 'for everybody' - just mentioned what some people do. Quote:

Got a Question about SSH shared Keys. I dont know what I'm doing wrong.
I just want do connect SSH/SSHFS as root@kindle without entering a password. This is what I tryed: Code:
ben@ubuntu:~$ ssh-keygen Generating public/private rsa key pair. Enter file in which to save the key (/home/ben/.ssh/id_rsa): /home/ben/.ssh/id_rsa already exists. Overwrite (y/n)? y Enter passphrase (empty for no passphrase): Enter same passphrase again: Your identification has been saved in /home/ben/.ssh/id_rsa. Your public key has been saved in /home/ben/.ssh/id_rsa.pub. The key fingerprint is: . . . ben@ubuntu:~$ sudo nautilus ~/.ssh; [sudo] password for ben: Initializing nautilus-gdu extension Code:
Shutting down nautilus-gdu extension ben@ubuntu:~$ ssh-copy-id -i ~/.ssh/id_rsa.pub root@192.168.0.16 root@192.168.0.16's password: Now try logging into the machine, with "ssh 'root@192.168.0.16'", and check in: ~/.ssh/authorized_keys to make sure we haven't added extra keys that you weren't expecting. ben@ubuntu:~$ ssh root@192.168.0.16 root@192.168.0.16's password: ################################################# # N O T I C E * N O T I C E * N O T I C E # ################################################# Rootfs is mounted read-only. Invoke mntroot rw to switch back to a writable rootfs. ################################################# [root@kindle root]# And he still asks for password.... ![]() I also tryed to copy the id_rsa.pub manually to /usbnet/etc/ no change ![]() |

You have a number of newbie mistakes there.
Including how you wiped out your system's default key pair. Read through my HowTo articles: https://www.mobileread.com/forums/sho...d.php?t=204450 Shows both common mistakes and correct setup of networking. Ah the joy of adding keys.
I've lost count of the amount of times I've run people through this. if I HAD to guess... root@127.0.0.1 NOT root@192.168.0.16 Last edited by twobob; 09-13-2013 at 11:04 AM. |

Also, check out the readme before following general purpose unixy tutorials, we do use a number of custom paths.
