It's not possible with an e-ink Kindle but very easy with a Kindle Fire.

I have over a thousand mobi ebooks, none bought from Amazon, all DRM free, most of which are stored on the Amazon for me as personal documents. All I had to do was email them to Amazon and they turned up on my Kindle. Easy peasy, nothing complicated at all. Plus over 2000 mobi files I created myself in Calibre from word documents of fan fiction.

Amazon have never once questioned why I don't buy my books from them. Their service and infrastructure is second to none.

I've sent quite a few books to my Kindle through Wi-Fi using "Right Click, Send to Kindle." You can choose to archive these books in your library...or not.

You might remember (a few years back) using the K2 or K3's onboard browser to send free books from Project Gutenberg directly to the Kindle. I suppose it cost Amazon a bit of $ for us to get free books that way since the K2 was 3G only. You at least had the option of Wi-Fi on the K3.

As for DRM stripping not being easy for someone without an IT career, my mother who barely uses a computer was able to set it up in about 15 minutes by following a plug-in tutorial for Calibre on Dear Author and conversion from there is two clicks.

And a Kindle can't connect directly to Sony to do the same. What's your point.
It's not disingenuous. Don't jump to conclusions. I don't know as I've only ever used the Sony store and Amazon.

I don't think that's a very transparent process for the *average user*.

We were discussing buying Kindle format books at other bookstores such as Baen, not converting ePub books for use on the Kindle. There are numerous stores other than Amazon who sell eBooks in Kindle format.

Amazon's business model is a closed one, and they share this strategy with all the other big players (Kobo, Sony, B&N).

Amazon has gone one step further by using their own proprietary format. To suggest that the decision to use .mobi (and not support .epub) is merely 'historical' and unrelated to proprietorial strategy is ridiculous. Amazon know exactly what they are doing. Sure you can convert with Calibre, but the average user can't do that.

All the big players want to lock users into their store and control the electronic book market. Amazon have just gone one step further to do it.

A huge number of "average users" do just that. Didn't you read the previous post from someone saying that their entirely IT-illiterate mother does it? Have you actually tried doing it yourself?

As has been pointed out to you there are also dozens of other places to buy books in Amazon's proprietary format besides Amazon themselves.

There's no doubt they want you to buy directly from them, that's why they do such a good job with pricing and features to keep average folks from looking or even wanting to look for other places to buy. That doesn't mean you have to buy Mobi books only from them.

Sure, but I've been pointing out that using .mobi over the open standard adds another level of complexity and obstruction to purchasing books for Kindle users and users of other platforms that have generally adopted the .epub standard.

What we really need is a standard whereby all e-reader devices can be used to buy e-books from any vendor. I believe Amazon has worked harder than most to avoid this.

Sure, but this was my whole point that I was very rudely attacked for several pages ago. Amazon *discourage* readers from using other sources. The mobi format is part of that strategy.

Whatever, Harry. The vast majority of Kindle users are not capable of using Calibre to convert formats. Have it your own way.

How do you know this? You have simply asserted this to be true without presenting one shred of evidence to support your claim.
