Don't forget that some independent writers sell their books from their website. From there, one usually has the choice between several formats including Kindle appropriate one (ones???).

Oh! and Smashwords anyone? So no conversion, but sideloaded ebooks. Did I miss something? |

Many smaller publishers sell DRM-free Mobi files on their websites too. In general the only thing your "locked" into Amazon for if you have a Kindle is DRM'd books (mainly books from big publishers) if you're unwilling to remove DRM.

Calibre and the Kindle works great. Kobo, Sony and all the other ePub brands (that I've tried) work great with Calibre. All I want to do is read and not worry about where the ebook originates. I can purchase an ebook just about anywhere and easily read it on my Kindle or in one of several reading apps on my Android devices.

However, I do feel some concern over how the glow light screen will hold up over time. I'm careful about cleaning, but one is working on a plastic layer over glass and plastic scratches easier. So far so good and I guess only time will tell. I don't feel like the Kobo would hold up so well under my husband, so he may be more interested in the new Sony, as careful cleaning would not be his thing! |

I will have to disagree here as getting collections transferred from Calibre to the Paperwhite while not impossible, is nowhere near as easy as it is with Sony or Kobo devices. I have had to jailbreak the PW, add numerous patches, and still need to remember to specifically export the collections from Calibre and then import them on the device itself - the import/export routine is every time I change the content of the reader. It is so much easier with the Kobos and Sonys to just transfer the books and let the collections sort themselves out automatically.

Non DRM epubs such as those on MR can be can be converted in about 20 seconds and sent to the kindle conveniently arranged in folders. DRM is difficult from a moral standpoint only IMO. I would not remove DRM from a library book for my mother's kindle. I would simply lend her one of my Sonys or Kobos. Perhaps if I did not have this option I would think differently or tell her to borrow the paper version. My mother would be fine with that ![]() Personally I prefer Sony to all other ereaders I have tried except that the display is not as good as some and I like the tap to turn pages rather than the swipe. And I am fine using the buttons so the last reason is not that important. I wouldn't dream of raining on someone else's parade by telling them that their beloved ereader was inferior though. I might show them mine if the occasion called for it, but never infer they were not smart because they didn't buy a Sony. Helen |

			Yes, you misunderstood the sentence.

"Smart people buy a Sony" is not the same as "they were not smart because they didn't buy a Sony" If you can't tell the difference then you should improve your reading skills. |

Unfortunately those of use who tried to discuss the Sony PRS-T3s possibly disappointing specs have been shouted down by those who maintain Sony is the best thing since sliced bread and anyone who buys anything else is a sheep.
