Having lots of trouble with calibre.

I'm have been attempting to convert a PDF file into Epub for several days now. The PDF is a manual for a motorcycle that i found on a forum post.

I ran through calibre exactly like any tutorial i watched, but I'm getting 20 blank pages at the start of the book everytime i sync it to my iphone, the cover is there and then 20 pages of blank followed by page 2 of the book, so nothing is lost It's just annoying.

I've checked the PDF and it does open and look normal on my computer...

I'll throw the file on this post incase anyone wants to take a look themselfs, but i assume there is just a setting somewhere that allows me to remove those pages, i just can't find the sucka...

Get a PDF viewer for your iPhone instead. Even if that is a bad solution, I think it still is a much better solution than what you can expect from converting the manual from pdf to epub.

Will there still be a table of contents in a PDF viewer?

I'm still working through the table of contents process in calibre and so far it doesn't work, when i click a heading in the table it just takes me to page 2 everytime... But this is a 1600 page manual and not having a ToC isn't an option.

You should be able to see if the pdf has a toc or not on your PC. Then get a viewer that allows you to use it.

I downloaded the PDF and was all set to try a conversion to Word format via Nitro PDF Professional but ran into a minor issue; the PDF has a password that prevents Nitro converting it.

I wonder if this might be causing issues for calibre as well?

For the record I was able to a) convert the PDF to a PRC using MobiCreator and b) convert the PRC to an ePUB using Calibre - but the results were just short of awful.

My experience is that converting technical manuals such as this from PDF to any e-book format is not worth considering - much easier to read as a PDF.

PeterT its a Secure PDF, that means it cannot be altered, in Tracker's XChange the annotation tools are grey. I printed the PDF to a PDF using Bullzip's PDF Print 'driver', then I could convert that PDF to a .doc with Nitro, but the results were awful -- but my experience with Nitro is limited and you probably know a million tricks that I don't know.

@Isla, The blank pages are intentional - they're scattered throughout the book, so that owners can make the maintenance of their motorcycle into an art-form. The TOC in the original PDF does not have links to the pages.

Take Adoby's advice, get a decent PDF reader for your phone. If you take the print PDF2PDF route then you could annotate that PDF.

Well actually I found a means to remove the security settings and now have a DOC version of it....

Try using the html source that the mobipocket creator makes and edit it into chapters. I have found that to be the easiest for many pdf conversions.

Covert the PDF to a DocX and the DocX to an EPUB comes out perfect every time!
