I can appreciate the desire to limit extended options like reading life on the Kobo, but what is it that's annoying about the Amazon firmware?

The integrated shop system, this txt file that registers which book you add to a folder with date and time stamp; and, well, Amazon does not read Epub files.

Why do you consider Amazon's bookstore annoying, may I ask?

I'm a bit bemused by that too. The "integrated shop system" means the ease of buying books and getting them delivered wirelessly to your Kindle is second to none. And even if it's not something you'd bother about, the shop can easily be ignored. So why it'd be annoying, I can't figure that one out?

As for collecting info about your books, well the easy answer is don't turn wifi on and sideload. The next easy answer is, I didn't think there was any definitive conclusion to what the various companies gleaned from your ereaders (not just Amazon, all of them - ereader privacy chart). And finally, who cares anyway? Are Amazon going to come round to my house and say, you bought a book from another shop and read it on your Kindle, please desist?

Epub, you can have that one.

From what I hear, Sony interacts better with Calibre than Kindle and Kobo do, and also Sony organizes collections more effectively than the other two brands. As I understand it, you have to register a Kindle before you can even use collections.

I'm used to epub. I can modify epub. But overall I don't care.

I am not to keen on proprietary even if it offers advantages. Also I would not like to be locked into a subset of stores.

Still many people are happy this way and are reading more because of convenience. Good for them.

My main reason for having an epub reader is that in addition to a lot of choices, I can download a library book in the middle of the night if I want to. If kindle books were available in Canadian libraries I would get a kindle too.

I plan on getting another reader in the fall if there is anything outstanding on offer.

I am hoping it is a Sony, as I have been in love with at least two of them, but if Amazon comes up with something better hardware and software wise, then I will not let my prejudices stand in the way Not that I actually need a better reader of course, as all of mine, even the Kobo's are adequate.

This has not been my experience since I got my first Kobo in Oct 2012. I was afraid I was going to be disapponted, being used to the calibre/Sony bells and whistles. However, I have found the calibre/Kobo integration to be excellent and is very actively maintained/improved.

Because it is the only one you're supposed to use with this device. Even people in Russia in 1952 had more freedom. And Amazon forgot to put a slot for a Micro SD card into this thing, too. But they put 5 LED lamps à 15 Cents into it. This is ridiculous imho.

Everybody does it, they all set it up so that their store is easiest to use with the device. But you can sideload easily enough, and Amazon never even tried to make that more difficult. Apple started the "no expansion slot" policy, Google adopted it right away and most others have been following it. I hate it, but again, Amazon shouldn't be the main target of our anger about this. As for the last point, do you really think others put in more expensive LED lamps? And why should they use more expensive ones when the current ones work so well. Not to mention that they are not even making money on the hardware.

That's wrong. Amazons decision for their one formats and not supporting epub does make it more difficult.

They would be stupid to support epub. Besides most people here estimate that for English language ebooks Amazon sells more than all epub sellers combined (and they started using their format a long time ago). So epub is no standard.

Do you really find conversion difficult???

I just tried to point out that all this stuff - infrared, "integrated light" LEDs, capacitive screen, and so fourth, is just some cheap plastic stuff that costs some Cents. The rest is marketing blah blah blah.

Someone who likes to read should use a Reader that doesn't force the user into a closed system like Kobo tries to do and Amazon actually does.

Sony: Micro SD card, no registration, 100% compatible with offline usage, no spam via Email, Wifi or "Free Books". And it's only 200 Grams with case and it's cheap. Should work for a year or so.

I get you hate Amazon, and that's perfectly acceptable but calling Sony ereaders Cheap is going a bit too far. They are pitting their new ereader without a front light against all the other 'non lighted' ereaders at roughly 1.5 times the cost. Nothing cheap about that.

I have a kindle yet buy all my books from other places, I buy nothing from Amazon, yet I email all my books to Amazon, they store them for me on their servers and send them to my Kindle, exactly the same way they would treat books I would have bought from them. Plus my ereader costs less than the new Sony, and is front lit.

That's the infrastructure and service which makes Amazon the most successful ereader manufacturer and retailer.

Some interesting comments about the Sony and Kobo software here.

I have no idea about the software on the new T-models, but I love the robust way Sony handles things on my PRS-950. I read that Sony's excellent reader software even got better with their latest models. So that should be good.

My only personal experience with an other brand is with my Onyx Firefly and I have to admit it sucks big time. The hardware of the Onyx is outstanding, but very little to no thought at all has gone into the software. It is crude and primitive and unappealing and can not make use of the Calibre tag system, which is very disappointing.

My first ereader was a Sony and because of that I naively expected every ereader to have software of comparable quality. Boy, was I in for a disappointment.

And my biggest irritation is that the Onyx has problems with displaying some epubs correctly. I did not even realize that could happen, because my Sony PRS-950 always displays every epub flawless (unless it is actually corrupt of course).

So that is a worry for me. I am really considering buying a Kobo Aura, but I am a bit afraid the software might disappoint.
