Calibre Companion won't install on my device.

I just got an Asus Memopad and Google Play said that Calibre Companion was compatible with my device. I purchased the app and tried installing it multiple times, but it said it was unable to install on storage or sdcard(don't have and sdcard inserted).

I immediately returned the app because I don't know how long it will take me to get help with this issue. Thanks in advance for any help you can give. I'd really like to be able to use this app since the Android ereaders I've tried so far don't seem that great for making custom folders.

Sorry, but I really have no idea why CC cannot install, assuming that you purchased CC from the device itself. The only thing I can think of is that there isn't enough memory, but that would be very strange considering that CC is not large and that the device is new. Hmmm ... another problem could be a flaky network, so the download is failing.

I looked at the specs for the memopad, and it looks a lot like the original Nexus 7 (made by Asus). Again, that leaves a mystery, because more than 20% of our users are using the original N7. And 14 CC users have a Memopad 10. However, there are no CC users with a Memopad 7.

My suggestion:
- Ensure you have a good connection to the internet
- Buy CC from the memopad
- Attempt to install.

If this fails, then do as you did before -- get the refund in the 15 minute window. We are out of luck.

Do note that if something goes wrong and the 15 minute window closes, contact us and we will manually give you the refund. You can use the "contact us" form on www.multipie.co.uk, or the email address at the bottom of every page.

Before I purchased on my laptop because it was easier to set up my payment info for the first time. I tried again purchasing from the tablet and I still got the same error. "Couldn't install on USB storage or SD card."

Using the same connection I used to install every other app I downloaded, and yeah the device is brand new so I definitely haven't run out of memory.

Not sure why it's even trying to install on USB storage or an SD card. I would think it should be installing on internal memory...

I have a keyboard case that has a couple of normal USB ports on it so I tried plugging in my thumb drive to see if that would help, but it still didn't work. I even tried disconnecting the external keyboard in case that was interfering but that didn't help either.

I'm quite disappointed as I was really looking forward to using this app. For some reason it wouldn't let me request a refund a second time even though I'm pretty sure I was within the 15 minute window so I will use the contact form on the page you provided.

I see there's another app called Calibre Library that supposedly has the same functionality as Calibre companion. I know it's not an official Calibre app, but do you know how well it works compared to Calibre companion? Should I give this app a try instead?

I did a quick Google search, here , here and here are a few interesting threads.

You could also go to settings and try a backup and reset of your device and start everything from scratch.

Good Luck.

@DoctorOhhh: thanks for that! CC allows itself to be installed on an SD card, which might be why it alone is suffering from this problem.

@Kythe42: If Steve of MultiPie has not already made the refund (I am waiting for his reply), do you want us to wait so you can try some of the suggestions? Let me know here and I will pass your wishes to Steve.

Well the mounting/unmounting of the SD card doesn't apply to me because I don't have an SD card in my tablet yet. I wasn't able to find any temp files mentioned in the external help threads when searching with a root browser.

I resorted to backing up/resetting my device and I still got the errors. So clearly it's not going to work on my device at all without further updates so I guess I'd better go ahead with the refund.

I'll try the Calibre Library I guess and hope it works. I need something to organize my ebooks since all the ereader apps I've tried(Kindle, Cool Reader, and MoonReader) don't seem to have a way to do that.

Thanks anyway for all the suggestions.

Update:
I've got my refund quickly so thanks Steve. I tried the Calibre Library app as well and I had the same problem. Ironically the free Calibre Sync works, but is ugly and cumbersome. Not sure if there's any other apps out there that I can use to sync with Calibre that have a better interface.

Also does anyone know of any ereaders that support links within ebooks? Some ebooks I read have footnotes at the end of the ebook with links to their appropriate section in the ebook. I've tried CoolReader and MoonReader and as far as I can tell, the links don't work in either one. I'd try kindle except that I didn't purchase any of the books in question through Amazon and I'm not sure how I can get the files into the app library. To be honest as much as I love my Kindle, I hate the Kindle app, and would rather use something else.

Mantano does. I have a few books with linked footnotes that are at the end of the book, and the links work fine. I have the premium version, but I would think the free version works the same for links.

Thanks for the suggestion. Was a little offput that it only does epub/pdf, but I guess that's not so different from using a Kindle that has to have mobi. Just that since I've been using the Kindle pretty much everything I already have is in mobi so I guess I'll be busy on calibre creating epub versions if I go with it.

I like the fact that it has the ability to create collections which I consider to be an essential feature since I can't get the Calibre Companion app to work. A couple of big drawbacks though are that I can't customize which parts of the screen I want to use for page turning and I can't set it so that I view ebooks in only one column in landscape mode(both of which can be done in CoolReader/Moon Reader). I've only tested the free version though. Are these options available in the paid version?

Yes, both these options are included with the premium version. I really like Mantano as my reader of choice, and paired with CC, it's the overall perfect solution for me.

I just tried an epub book with links in Moon+ Reader Pro and the links worked fine. It took me to the footnote then back from the footnote to where I was in the book.

I did a quick check on a mobi book and Moon+ Reader did not recognize the link. But he is always updating the reader so dropping him a note about this limitation might bare fruit.

Cool, thanks for the info. Sounds like it would have pretty much all the features I'd want in an ereader then, which would make it worth the price. I haven't had my tablet that long but I haven't seen any other apps so far that I've been interested in that have cost that much. Will definitely try the premium if it does all that.

Well originally I tried it with a mobi ebook. I just tried it using the epub file that I converted from the mobi for use with Mantano and the links worked. That's just ridiculous that it wouldn't work with the mobi file when it's supposed to support mobi. Oh well... I'll probably get the premium version though. It's half off until the end of the month. I doubt I'll use it as my primary reader since there seems no way to create collections(unless that's a premium feature), but I'll need something to read my graphic novels with which neither Mananto or CoolReader can do.

Update: I failed to install the paid version of MoonReader as well. At this point I figured something was up with my device so I contacted the Google Play store. They said they thought the problem was that the apps that aren't installing properly for me probably require an SD card to store certain kinds of information, so it's the fact that I don't have one that's a problem. When I bought my device I was tempted to get a 32 gb sd card because it was only around $25 but I figured I would wait until I actually needed extra space before getting it. Guess I'll have to order it now because it's ridiculous that I not be able to use any paid apps. If the MoonReader paid app works after getting the SD card, then I will try Calibre Companion again.

I can say with certainty that CC doesn't specifically require an SD card. However, it does want to be able to create the folder where books go, which in Android terms goes on the "SD Card", over which we have zero control. In all cases we have seen up to yours, if there wasn't a real SD card in a device then it defaulted to main memory. If GP support is right then your device is different.

All that said, if it is paid apps that fail then I suspect the problem is in the Google Licensing Service, not the apps themselves. Not that it matters ...

Please let us know what happens.

Well I got the SD card and inserted it and mounted it and I still got the error. I emailed support for the Google Play store telling them what happened and suggested to them that it might be a licensing issue.

I didn't get the same person answering me as the last time and the idiot told me that if it was a licensing issue that would mean I had installed the app previously from a different app store and that I should uninstall the app and reinstall it from Google Play. I replied telling him I can't uninstall the app because it wouldn't install at all in the first place and that I've never purchased apps from anywhere but Google Play. I haven't gotten a response back yet.

I noticed that Calibre Companion is also available from the Amazon app store. Would it be worth it to try downloading/installing it from there, or should I hold off and see what else Google tech support has to say?

I really don't know if the amazon store version would work. And without any level of certainty I can't recommend trying it unless you can do the test inside any refund window they provide. The problem is that it can be difficult for us to give refunds for purchases made at amazon. I don't know all the details -- something to do with it being very hard to link a purchase with a person.

I would contact ASUS support. This is not normal operations and you should get it fixed or replaced by ASUS. If you bought it local I would exchange it first. It certainly can't hurt.

I saw a complaint from one dad, his daughters had identical Samsung Note tablets and one had your problem and the other did not.
