2.8.1 in Australia?
Has anyone in Australia been able to get the 2.8.1 upgrade?

I tried with the Kobo Desktop Reader and a Wi-Fi connection this afternoon, and it's still showing 2.6.1

Yes: wirelessly on a Glo, not a Touch. I don't think 2.8.1 is being pushed to Touches.

If 2.8.1 does nothing else, at least it fixes the utterly annoying bold/italic bug. For some people this is important (even though the bug should never have existed in the first place, and when it did should have been fixed at once. Anyway, it's gone now, and good riddance to it.)

Thanks, doubleshuffle. I agree that fixing the bold/italic bug makes it worthwhile to install the 2.8.1 firmware. My elderly eyes can barely read the model number on the bottom edge, but I'm sure it ends with a C. Is it safe to manually install the firmware with this model Touch?

Yes, you can install 2.8.1 on a Touch N905C. I've also installed the 2.8.1 firmware on 2 old Touches and it has worked without issue. One item to remember is that the Touch and Mini do not get the tiled interface that the Glo and Aura do. Otherwise, you do get the other bug fixes.

I'd be willing to try it on my old Touch, as I can't even get anything newer than 2.5.2 at the moment, as long as it won't interfere with future ugrades, if any. Have Kobo said if they are ever going to upgrade the older Touch readers again?

I haven't heard any comments from Kobo about future firmware updates for any models.
