Most books from Amazon can be on up to 6 devices at one time, but if you remove the book from a device, then sync, that license is freed up, and you can then download it to another device.

Not 100% sure it's still the case, but Adobe has/had a limit, 6 activations I think?, of the number of ADE/RMSDK activations allowed to an Adobe ID but they supposedly slowly increase the number allowed over time to take into account old devices/computers and will also increase it upon request (although it can be a pain from what I've read).

Can't think of any other limits in the eBook realm on registered/activated devices off hand.

The two biggest reasons for me is to avoid losing access to my books when the seller either goes out of business or moves to a new technology (I've lost access to several books this way) and being able to access the book on the device of my choosing. Even when I read on the iPad and can use Sony, Apple and Amazon ebook apps, I prefer to keep everything in one app so it's easy to see everything.

Btw I have noticed that a lot of ebooks available in US are not available in UK, as well as the new Amazon Worlds for fan fiction.

DRM: Digital Rights Management, "copy protection". Detailed discussion of the mechanics of DRM removal aren't permitted on MobileRead, I can only suggest that you google for Apprentice Alf's Blog.

The different availability in various countries is a contractual matter between author and publishers.

I have talked to an authors about that and he was not familiar with those restrictions. He had provided free books and those were [I guess] subsequently limited to US. Also a book from another author that I have downloaded for free suddenly stopped being available on amazon uk. It was still available on other UK based web shops. The author was not familiar with that and claimed it should be available. Contacting Amazon led to nothing.
But I think this is off topic so I am not going to flood the topic any more.

Thank you for the blog name.

Amazon have no limited on the number of devices that can be registered to an account; the limit is simply on the number of devices (generally 6) on which a specific book can be loaded simultaneously).

ADE, however, does impose a limit on the number of devices that can be simultaneously registered to a specific account. People with a rapid "turnover" of devices have fairly often run into this limit.

This is generally due to a book having different US and UK publishers. Similarly there are a lot of eBooks available in the UK which are not available in the US.

If I'm understanding your point correctly then you're right-I enjoy reading the books much more than I do reading the licenses. But I learned how to read licenses at work so sometimes I do read them-and they're generally becoming more readable due to some court rulings invalidating license terms deemed to be deliberately confusing. It's taking a long time but lawyers actually are starting to learn that when dealing with 'regular' people, simpler is better.

Indeed! Reason 6 for me too. I buy kindle books if the price is cheaper or if it's a kindle daily deal/freebie. And so what??? I can buy a paper book in any store I want to, so it should be the same for ebooks.

I have had Adobe increase it on request when I hit 6 (having 3 few buggy 1st gen Nook devices in a row ran through them pretty fast--4 nooks, 1 computer, 1 iPhone), but since that increase I haven't had a problem adding any new computers and devices. The problem with Adobe is simply that it is (or was) impossible to *deregister* a device no matter if it is dead or you don't own it anymore.

Since an update a couple of months ago, Adobe will no longer download to my Nook (my only registered ereader), despite having tried every fix I can find. Now I just use Calibre for everything. It never fails me.
