Sony PRS-T3 leaks in various Internet stores / coming on Sep 19? - Page 4

Sigh. I really haven't liked the firmware on the T line of the readers (not interested in rooting it, very much miss the alphabet navigator of the 650 line), but a front-light probably wouldn't have tempted me.

Maybe if I'd seen a PW in active and just "had to have" the higher resolution screen, but I haven't, so this one just isn't different enough to tempt me to buy yet another reader.

I was hoping it would be waterproof like the Xperia. Oh well, I'll wait for the official release to pass judgement.

Or how about this (since the resolution of the few images available is so bad, you really can't tell what's at the top or not). The case and reader and light are all one unit, that's why it seems the case is sold with the reader. The light is one of those thin strip lights that will slide down between the inside of the cover and the back of the reader, and will also charge while you charge the reader, it runs off the reader battery. Even though I like the whiter background of the frontlight, I could probably live with that setup.

OK, that explains... but it is still hard for me to believe that sony will go ahead and release a non-lit reader in a market situation like this... But sony might just release a reader without light in the end anyway... I guess I will have to wait to see what PRS-T3 has to offer to compete with other models...

Sigh.... guess I just will not have a new epub reader. Sony is the only brand that I would consider for epubs, but the reader must have a front light. In this case, it looks like Kobo might be the only viable epub reader left standing, unless the Nook recovers. I just am not at all interested in Kobo.

Pricing. $158 Canadian Dollars and 188 Swiss Franc's along with their approximate US equivalents.

I'd possibly be interested in a new Sony, but not with those specs at those prices.

Remember those prices could include a cover and light, even though it may not be a front light like we're all hoping for. $158 US isn't bad then.

I think you're right with this. It seems that the T3 always comes with a cover. And it seems that there are two versions available: Cover with light and cover without light. That would be six different T3s (red, white, black / light, no light), but no seperate covers anymore.

True, of course then I'd be paying for a cover I most likely wouldn't want anyway.

Of course depending on the software I may pay it just so I can have something I don't have issues with like I do with the Aura.

I don't care much about a light myself, just think it's odd to exclude it given their popularity in the current market. I think I've used the light on my Aura twice since I got it right after release and it's a nice even light, but I don't really find I have a need for it.

You could very well be right ! In the french article that was done earlier this year and alimented much speculation about a follower of PRS-T2 (with or without light), the Sony Manager stipulated that in their experience build in (as built in the display) light did not work well, and that an exterior lighting worked better.

Now if for say 149€ (speculation on my part) you get a PRS-T3 including a cover that itself includes a light which uses the device battery, it is probably not such a bad deal . It is still not a good one, but it would at least be coherent with what , reading that article, seems to be their product philosophy, as well as their pricing politic until now. If they really think that an external source light is superior to an internal one, than it does make sense to price their new device higher than the existing internal lighted devices.

And it is true that there are still some people who tried a lighted device and were disappointed with the effect and came back to a normal device with an external lighting source (clip-on), so those would be satisfied, but, and this is were I think that Sony is wrong in their strategical approach, they are the minority.

I personally much prefer Sony to Kobo, also because they are coherent in what they do and they do well what they do, but the way this cover looks reminds me too much of those cheap (and not exactly good looking) covers you still find on ebay with the integrated light that folds in the back. The front might still look OK, but the back of the cover... whoever designed it deserves to be publicly stoned.

Be prepared for big gaps in the text if the book has long paragraphs, to find that footnote links do not work, and that nearly all the fonts available show bolded text rather than italic when all the other readers show italicised text.

I suggest that you check out the Kobo forum.

I have a PRS T2 and a Kobo Touch and will very likely buy the T3 when it becomes available - light or no light.

The design of the new cover with light looks indeed different than the old one.

The old cover for T1 has the disadvantage that it is uncomfortable to hold with the left hand (when you write something with your stylus in the right hand for example). Don't forget: Sony users have light. A Sony Ereader has light in the Sony cover, not on the deveice.

I think the new design of the cover should make it easier to hold the device in the left hand. This huge battery compartment isn't there anymore and that might be an advantage. I didn't like this battery thing.
