Update 0.9.43 Issues, CBR files also not converting

I am not the most tech savvy, so please be patient.

I've been using a much older version of Calibre and started having issues converting CBR files into EPUB or PDF. After many attempts, I decided that maybe upgrading Calibre would be the solution. Big mistake.

I no longer get error messages that the files were unable to convert. Instead, when I attempt to convert a book it brings up a dialogue page that lists every single one of my applications on my Macbook. I tried choosing Calibre as an option, but then the entire program unexpectedly quits and an error page stating it will send the error to Apple pops up.

When I click on a book that is already in my Calibre library it does allow me to view it, so I think it just no longer converts files.

Please help! Should I attach the error page that pops up that says it will send the report to Apple or is there another way for me to get the error info so that I can post it here?

I tried restarting it in debug mode and this is what I got:
Quote:
calibre Debug log
calibre 0.9.43 isfrozen: True is64bit: True
Darwin-10.8.0-i386-64bit Darwin ('64bit', '')
('Darwin', '10.8.0', 'Darwin Kernel Version 10.8.0: Tue Jun 7 16:33:36 PDT 2011; root:xnu-1504.15.3~1/RELEASE_I386')
Python 2.7.4
OSX: ('10.6.8', ('', '', ''), 'i386')
Starting up...
Started up in 121.02 seconds with 1945 books
Not sure if I did that right or if that even shows the problem. Please let me know what info you need so that I can fix this issue.

Thank you in advance!

Kind of a slow start up. Snail slow .. 1945 books is nothing.

Something is seriously wrong (an it is probably hardware). Calibre does grab a big bite for many tasks, then settles down to an idle.

1) Click the add books button
2) Select the cbr file you want to add to calibre
3) Select the newly added book
4) Click the convert button

If you are using the calibre GUI then the book should be in the library before you convert it, follow Kovid's steps above.

If you still get the error, exactly what are you doing and at what point do you get an error?

Thank you for the replies.

This is exactly what I have been doing. After I add the new book, I select the new book and click convert individually. Then a dialogue box pops up telling me to choose an application. I don't know a better way of explaining it, so I've attached a photo of this pop-up.

I have never had this happen with the older version of Calibre. This only began happening after I updated to 0.9.43.

After this dialogue box opens, I attempted to choose Calibre as the application and that's when Calibre crashes.

Would it be helpful to copy and paste the error report that automatically gets sent to Apple?

Something is corrupt. This pop-up should not be opening and certainly selecting anything in it will cause havoc.

I'm not an OSX experienced user, but I would suggest uninstalling calibre and deleting the associated downloaded update. Then re-download a new copy from here and try again.

I don't think so.

I was afraid this would be the solution. Thanks so much for your help.

Any tips to make sure I don't lose my Calibre library? To be clear, if I uninstall Calibre, I will have to re-add all my books to Calibre all over again?

On my Widows machine I have never had uninstalling calibre affect my library or settings. Just for peace of mind you could always backup your library to another location.

Or you can wait for an Apple user to speak up with specifics.

So OSX uses Growl for notifications. Even though I'm not a OSX user I should have noted what it was asking.

Always learn something new here.

To be precise, older versions of OS X used Growl. Newer ones have notifications built-in. The OP's system probably has some debris left over from a previous growl install/removal that is causing the issue.

Thanks for the info.

I still should have noticed, to busy changing the OP's graphic to right side up. If I had a pop up asking me where growl was I certainly would not point it to calibre. Then again maybe I would have pointed to calibre. I mean since I didn't see it correctly here there is no reason to believe I would have seen correctly it live.

Brilliant! This worked!

Oddly, though, now my conversions are taking roughly 10 minutes each. I did it twice to be sure, and they both sounded like they were chugging through the conversion. I suspect maybe this is a hardware issue although this never happened with the earlier version of Calibre. Oh well! I'm ecstatic it's working again.

Many thanks to kovidgoyal and DoctorOhh for your time, patience, and assistance!!
