Thank you for contacting Kobo Customer Care.

We are very sorry for the inconvenience but we can definitely help you with this.

Sometimes, due to having an outdated version of the Kobo Desktop Application on your computer will not download the latest update for your eReader. Therefore, we suggest that you proceed on uninstalling and reinstalling the Kobo Desktop at first, and then sync your library to your eReader.

Having mentioned the above, none of your books will not be affected. Below, we have attached the steps in order to do this. We suggest that you try the following:

* Please sign out of the Kobo Desktop Application by clicking on the account icon (the little man icon), and then clicking "Sign Out". Then, perform the uninstall and reinstall to refresh the application completely.

Uninstall the Desktop Application (Windows).

1. From the Windows Start menu, click Control Panel.
2. Click Add/Remove Programs, Uninstall a program, or Programs and Features (depending on your version of Windows).
3. Click Kobo from the list of installed applications.
4. Click Uninstall/Change.
5. Click Uninstall.
6. Click Close.
7. Restart the Computer.

Then please install the latest version of the Desktop Application (Windows).

1. Navigate to the Kobo website http://www.kobosetup.com/pc/explorer.
2. Double-click the saved file.
3. Follow the installation wizard.
4. Once installed, restart the computer.

We were glad to assist you today. If you have further questions or concerns please do not hesitate to write or call us.

Sincerely,
The Kobo Team

Because of this...

Please also be aware that SameerH, the Kobo product manager, made a veiled threat in a post after the 2.4 came out that there may be additional problems with sideloading firmware in the future.

And now they are telling me to do a Factory Reset to get the latest firmware!

What f/w level are you hoping to get, and for which model Touch?

Fair enough, but un warranted for the most part.

Regardless it boils down to what you feel comfortable about doing.

Good luck

You have no choice other than sideloading then. The upgrade from Kobo's servers would be to 2.8.1.

Going back to SameerH's comment, I'm not sure that I would interpret it as a veiled threat. I saw it as a simple statement that sideloading firmware is not an official Kobo supported method of installing firmware and that there is no guarantee that doing so will be supported in the future. As an example, the Xerox multifunction machines I support had a recent firmware update that removed the ability to install unsigned firmware updates which prevents earlier firmware versions from being reinstalled.

Regards,
David

Haven't kept up with this, but are you saying the 2.8.1 upgrade is available for N905B?

The current 2.8.1 firmware will load on the older Touch N905/N905B. I tried this on one Touch where I was upgrading the internal SD card so I had a way to back out of the upgrade and then on a second Touch about a week later. Both units updated to 2.8.1 without issue.

David

The upgrade to 2.6.1 for the N905/N905B Touches seems to have been withdrawn around the same time that the 2.6.1b upgrade for the Glo/Aura/Mini/Touch N905C was released. Even if your old Touch upgraded to 2.6.1, it will revert to 2.5.2 after a factory reset.

David

Thanks for the information, wonder why Kobo were unable to tell me that?
