Be a faster, better reader...

Do it yourself (micro) Shock Therapy to improve your cognition!

Quote:
Wearable tech can track your sleep patterns, give you walking directions that float above the eye, and measure your heart rate using the shirt on your back. But can a wearable gadget make you think faster, or even make you momentarily smarter?

Turns out, it can. But only by attaching electrodes to your head that shock your brain, which is the how devices like the Focus headset work. The Focus is designed for gamers --- only if you're 18 years and older -- and made headlines in May when its Website opened for pre-orders. The Focus marks the first device of its kind, and it could bring what is now a cutting-edge enthusiast activity into the mainstream.
Overclocking the brain? I dunno...

Also what if the unit malfunctions and gives you a bigger shock than expected or it's later found that it causes brain damage? A person only has one brain and can't afford to have it damaged after all.

I'd be more worried about hackers figuring out how to reconfigue the headband to target the brain's "happy center". Wireheads ahoy!

As the link suggests, tDCS has been around a very long time but medical researchers seem to argue over the best duty cycles and such. Ex-in-laws had private equity in one medical company that was going to open centers in the US (they were already open in Canada).

It sure does look like one malfunction away from delivering frontal lobe electroconvulsive treatment.

It ought to be laughably simple to make sure the device cannot deliver sufficient voltage to be harmful even if it malfunctions. I'd be more concerned about whether it has any effect whatsoever, seeing as there are no links to independent test results. It also seems to me that the device is around three times more expensive than it needs to be, given the simple task it is supposed to carry out.

That is one of the time-honored ways to make a device that is incapable of doing harm: to make a device which is incapable of doing anything. Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation is a real thing, if you google it, you'll find some pretty cool things. But I am skeptical that this device does anything at all. It wouldn't be the first such medical device to do nothing. The Museum of Questionable Medical Devices had a collection of quackery that was quite impressive.

There are a good number of 19th century medical devices that were for giving electric shocks I'm sure. And other questionable medical aid. Like having a Dr. give treatment for hysteria.

I know it's real and has useful applications, I just haven't read any research which leads me believe that it'd make me a better Counterstrike player (if I was one).

Yup, pretty sure that's where we're at. 250 bucks worth of nothing.

I don't think people swallowing that scam would ever be in need of a real spare brain. They're doing fine without using the one they have now.

Reading is not a race. I could care less how many books I read. I just enjoy reading for the enjoyment it gives me. Some books I hate to finish and I feel like I am abandoning my friends. That is another reason I like to read a book more than once.
