Then today I figured I'd sync to clear out the download cue for the books I bought during the last code contest. Everything downloaded fine, but when I went to put the new books on my TBR shelf both the Nonfiction TBR and Read shelves were showing up twice and the old 'test' shelf re-appeared again. I can't delete or rename the "new" duplicate shelves. Going through the proper actions works, but the shelves stay put and their names don't change either. The test shelf deleted again just fine.
I had major problems with my database (aura) yesterday, sooo... reset, syn'dc (I got the 2.8.1 through kobo desktop this time), turned off the reader, loaded some 1000 books through calibre: I too had all the shelves twice, but also all empty. I opened books, turned off and on the reader a few times, added a few books, same problem. Also I couldn't transfer my reading positions, and I had error messages about tranferring metadata. Also the kepub utilities didn't eliminate the sync tile.

So I went to bed and read my current kepub (I had noted approximately where I was before doing all this) and a new epub "pour voir". This morning, I transferred some 300 more, and managed to store my recent position on the 2 books read - miracle, my shelves were filled with books, but a good number (not all this time) were duplicated, one (catalogues, with 1 book) triplicated.

Also, I've noted the screen reacts real slow when I try to exit the shelves or go home.

Connected with calibre again: I tried to restore reading parameters and got the same type of problems I had yesterday

Thanks
I had the problem with a duplicated shelf I couldn't delete - the way I solved it was in Calibre I renamed the shelf from "History" to "temp" for all the books I had on that shelf. That should have left an empty "History" shelf when I synched. It did, and the shelf was deleted and all the books now appeared in a single "temp" shelf.

When, though, I reversed the process I got two "History" shelves so I then re-did it all to name the shelf "Historic" and I only have one of them.

I think there may be something special about certain shelf names - I hit a similar problem with a shelf called "Reading List". I suspect that some shelf names are used by Kobo for their own purposes.

EDIT:: Have a look at this thread - https://www.mobileread.com/forums/sho...d.php?t=216294 which is probably a better explanation than my idea of "reserved" shelf names.

Unfortunately, the tiles don't always disappear immediately. Some of them need something else to happen to force an update of the tiles. Going away from the home screen and back can be enough. But doing something that causes the tiles to change seems to work better.

I am not seeing that. How many shelves do you have.

I discovered this bug yesterday while working on other changes. I have a fix but am waiting for some testers to report on those changes.

Yes my sync tile did disappear the next time I connected the reader and did your "dismiss tiles".

Otherwise I have 38 shelves, of which as of today 17 are duplicated, one is triplicated, and none can be deleted, even though the reader does ask if I really want to and there is no error flag.

Your speed in correcting bugs is impressive, and this doesn't prevent reading, so I can definitely wait until your fix is tested.

Yes, connecting to the PC will generally do it. Especially if you send a book or two.

I had some repeating shelves recently, but I thought it was related to the beta firmware program. Getting rid of them is a pain. The best way I could do it meant making a change in the database and syncing.

If you think I'm fast at fixing bugs, you should see how fast I produce them

The new version is up now. Calibre will get the update message later today.

LMAO! Show me a coder that claims otherwise, and I'll show you a thoroughly tedious curmudgeon, and a liar, or possibly a really great typist!

I have repetitively experienced the same diminishing shelf content issue. In some cases the number of books on a shelf drops to 0, in others the some number less than what I had added.
I've also had duplicate shelves.
Very annoying, but I do use Calibre to sideload books.
From what I have read above I'll have to do some testing with Calibre.
Glad to have found this thread - it's been driving me nuts!

I've said to heck with it and am currently doing a factory restore.

I found I could get rid of the extra shelves that couldn't be deleted or renamed by renaming them in the Android app and then deleting them after a sync on the Aura showed the extras with the new name (of course who knows if they'll stay deleted ). Unfortunately that also caused two of the shelves to lose all of their content that weren't Kobo kePub's (lost all epub.kepub's and regular epub's). I just got fed up and reset the darn thing to factory (it's downloading updates now).

At this point, after reading over 50 books on the Aura, and I feel giving it a fair shake, I'm really hoping Amazon comes out with a Kindle that uses this larger screen (which I like a lot), because I'm tired of having to put up with all of Kobo's little quirks and problems. I just want to read my damn books, and in my experience Kindle's "just work" without any screwing around. Kobo does so much I like, but right now I'm quite frustrated.

OK, hopefully someone can answer this. Is there a way to delete/clear all record of shelves that Kobo stores on their servers? I'm back up and running after a restore and now have all of the same shelf problems as before. If I could just clear all record of these shelves and basically start over I'd be happy, for now.

EDIT: I deleted the unwanted shelves so that I only have the three I want. Problem now is that the book count is off when compared to what's on each shelf. I currently have 13 books on the reader, all kePub's downloaded directly from Kobo. My collections look like this...
  • Nonfiction TBR - 5 books (but it really only has four)
  • Read - 2 books (but it really has none)
  • TBR - 12 books (but it really only has nine)

The same happens to my Glo after updating to 2.8

I've a dozen of shelves each one containing 50-100 epubs.

Unfortunately, this is not an issue with the firmware; it's related to an error / problems with the backend services at Kobo.

I to am experiencing similar shelf problems after 2.8.1 on my Glo. Kobo's answer is to carry out a factory reset. Guess what happened? Did not solve the problem and my duplicate shelves increased. Hope someone gives Kobo a kick.

I recently had the same issue. This worked for me. One thing to remember is that if you have multiple instances of the same shelf, you only have to clear the first one as you do this.

Some shelves would indicate that they had several books on them, but when I went to manage them, they appeared empty. I did have the option to "create" the shelf. I did that after removing the books manually in the manage shelf area. After doing that, some of my kobo books appeared on the shelf, with "buy now" on them. I already owned these books.

I only had 31 books on the device. 6 in main memory and the remainder on the SD card.

This was not my first rodeo, so I knew what to do.

1) I removed the kobo books from my library via the website
2) I removed the SD card
3) I signed out of my account
4) I signed back in (now have a clean Db)
5) I went through the shelves and deleted the buy now books (which I already owned) using manage shelf and any other books that showed on shelves until all the shelves showed as empty. With multiple instances of the same shelf, you only have to do this for the first one.
6) I connected via calibre with the driver set to remove empty shelves
7) I confirmed that I no longer had shelves on the device
8) I did a sync which resulted in no shelves at all as there were no books on the device and the empty shelves were removed by Calibre.
9) I added the kobo books I wanted on the device into I'm Reading via the website
10) did a wifi sync to get them on the device
11) added the SD card in again

All was well.

Found out that the "extra" books were books I'd had on the given shelf previously so that when I switched from viewing books that were on the reader to viewing all books I could then see and remove the books from the shelf so the numbers were correct.
