Calibre doesn't covert my .rtf: why?

Hi guys,

I own a Kindle and I've always used Calibre to transfer my .rtf or .pdf files into my device. Until a few weeks ago I used an old (but trusty) laptop that ran on Windows XP.

Now I bought a new laptop that runs on Windows 8 (adapted) and I've tried for the first time to use Calibre here. Usually Calibre never gave me troubles in converting .rtf to mobi but now for the first time it tells me there's an error in conversion. Normally I just upload the file onto calibre and click "Send to device", then it asks me to convert the file, I click 'yes' and it's done. Today a window appeared telling me there's no right format for it.

I tried clicking on "Convert books individually" choosing mobi as output format but it didn't work either. What should I do?

Thanks for your help!

There's also a normal desktop with the little icons, not only the smartphone-like desktop (sorry, I don't know much about technology...)

@dotofink

I think Kovid intended you look at this http://manual.calibre-ebook.com/faq....n-denied-error

In English the smartphone interface is called 'Modern'.

For some reason Calibre gets these Permission errors on some Windows 8 systems. They are in the Users Temp folder - which is bizarre.

There is a brute force method that will 'probably' fix it - which is to give 'Everyone', 'Full Control' of the folder 'C:\Users\Cecilia\AppData\Local\Temp'

I can walk you through doing that, but if you have a tech savvy friend it would probably be better to have them to show you how its done. They also might be able to diagnose the underlying problem

I'm not sure if this is wise, from a malware/system security standpoint. Appdata\local\temp is already enough of a problem for malware - I'm not sure loosening up security on the folder is a good idea.
