And if it is back list books like part of a popular series they will be available.
I would suggest that people's relationships with books are much more complex than the casual vs. avid reader categorizations can encompass.

Take a simple example: it seems as though the majority of active members around here are actively engaged with novels and non-specialist non-fiction. Yet how would a reader of technical books fit into that categorization? Are they avid because of how much they read? Are they casual because their reading may be geared towards professional development? How would people who want to read, but don't have the time (or interest to devote much time) to read much? They may have a to-read list, much like us, but they may not pursue it to the degree we do. Those books they want to read may be popular titles, bet things that they didn't have a chance to read years back, or may be books that they want to re-read.

The reasons for reading are probably even more varied than the reasons why those people aren't reading. Just because someone doesn't dedicate the time to reading doesn't mean that they aren't interested in genre titles (new or backlist), classics, etc.. I think it's a shame to say that these people want to read something just because it has received a lot of press or because they're stuck in an airport. That's almost like denying that they are people who have similar interests to us, but may seek to pursue those interests in different ways.

I don't know why you're getting angry at me for genuinely not understanding what you're trying to say.

This is definitely true. One of the big problems with book stores is that clerks always seem to feel the need to comment on your purchases.

I used to get a hard time (er, no pun intended) buying trashy horror and fantasy novels. Not porn, but often with tacky covers.

You made a stupid comment that makes no sense and now you're accusing other people of being humourless? That's rich!

Yes, I know. Don't you feel sorry for those poor mis-guided souls who don't know the pleasure of reading a good book.

Having said that, it's always frustrating to see the typical ignorant romance=porn belief come up again. There are romances available without a bit of sex. And there's erotica without any romance. And then there's the stereotypical "the babysitter made me a man" or "I watched my sister take her showers" porn.

They are not synonymous.
I agree. There is no one type of Romance. Some is erotic and some isn't and Romance and Porn aren't the same thing. When I think of the Romance genre I think of a story with a well defined plot whether or not there is explicit sex but with Porn the story is all about the sexual act that the characters are going to take part in. Plot development and character development take a back seat to the actual sex scene in a porn story, but they don't in a romance. And the difference between Erotica and Porn (IMO) is also in the detail of development. Porn just deals with the act of sex but Erotica while it has to do with a sex act also has more development in the story line.

I don't know about books by J.K. Rowling but some fan fictions based on the series are certainly explicit enough.
