Fantasies on the smart watches of the future

smart watch as e-readers:
I think future's smart watches as e readers may be heavily focused on audio books. Those audio books may not just be novels, they may also be comedies, talk shows, academic lectures etc. They can be downloaded (or streamed) to you watch, and you can hear it via a wireless headphone connected to the watch.

smart watch UI:
In the PC ages, we used to have key board and mouse, in smart phone and tablet ages, we have multi-touch screen. For small screened watch, we should expect some other UI to better interact with (on top of mulit touch ofc), I think we already have this kind of technology, we just need to better specialized it for the watch: siri like voice control. You can basically open an audio book(or jump to specific chapters/play time), open an app, dial a number, checking mail box info, and other specific tasks etc, by just talking to the watch, and the watch will do the task, and sometimes, provide audio or visual feed back to the user afterwards. Two possible hardwares that works good with the watch I think are: 1. gyroscope, with that, user can have the option to let the watch to listen voice command if the user is holding the arm horizontally and have the watch point to the upper positions. 2. wireless mirophone. This can make the watch more focused on user's voice, and more resistant to surronding noises.

smart watch apps:
I think the apps for the smart watches of the future may be very different than what we have in our phons/tables of today. For our phones and tablets, most apps are baiscally something we open, then do sth with it, then leave it or close it afterwards. But for smart watches, the app model may be very different: people won't want to spend too much time on a very small screen, but they might carry it all the time. So the smart watch apps in the future, I think, will mostly be background tasks that assists the user. Here are some of the examples that I can come up with:
1. A security sompany can make a smart watch app for elders, with fall detection. So when the old guy fall, the watch will automatically connect the security center/or 911, so the old guy can ask for help.
2. A security company can make a smart watch app for parents, to track down where their kids are, and allow them to dial each other very conviniently.
3. Companies can make smart watch apps for athletes, to calculate their running miles, velocities, keep track their best performances, milestones etc.

The traditional, open-use-close app model can still be useful, but should
some day feature voice command, for example:

4. E publishers can make audio book apps for their smart watch customers, like the ereader app we have on our tablets, which allows we to buy and play audio books, with just talking to the watch.

etc etc etc...

I think the sensors/technologies on the watch will be essiential to what the watch can potentially do, for example sth like, celluar integration, gps, velocity sensor, gyroscope etc ...

Maybe during the start of the smart watch market, smart watch may be heavily relied to get the jobs done by working with the smart phones. But later in the future, we might expect high-end smart watches that comes with all this technologies on its own, without any assistance from the smart phone.

OK, thats all I can think for now, so whats your fantasies for the smart watches of the future?

(Geez, my home internet is down for days, and still down, I am actually doing this at my school campus, and now I am heading back to home, disconnected, so see you guys in a few days.)

Wouldn't mind it having an accurate method of telling the time...

I thought that the "smart watch" might have a multi-day main spring, or run off minute pressures changes in blood flow.

There are already watches that get wound by the vibrations of your body as you move and walk around.

If we are talking about fantasy watches as tablet/e-reader hybrids, how about a watch with a switchable holographic screen?

Whatever technological components they end up having, a device as tiny as a watch is going to present some serious challenges to interface designers.

Perhaps something like a combination of this and this (both further developed than now) would help.

Smart watches will be an endangered species once smart glasses (e.g. Google's)evolve. Seems to me a heads-up display does everything better.

There was an article about a likely reason why smartglasses - just like bluetooth headsets - will never gain significant market shares, simply because they are too dorky-looking. I for one can do without any thing permanently a) in front of my eyes or b) dangling off my ear.

@mbovenka:
actually thought about this when writing my first post. I do not believe projection devices will work when attached to a human. Also you would be limited to using one hand, while the other needs to stay immobile. Naw, can´t see it.

I don't think smart watches will catch on - think we will go directly to neural implants!
