Maybe some kind of glitch with your specific device? All of the sort modes on my Aura work just as they should in 2.6.1

My Glo does the same (Also shows ADE page numbers every so often), Mini works fine.

Restore to factory settings may or may not work (Haven't bothered to try as I only go in the library when I'm opening a new book to read and the extra stab at the screen to change the sort order wasn't too much effort).

Thanks GeoffR, Oak, MikeB for your replies. :-)

OK, I checked out the Kobo ereader.conf file, and it contains the following:

Quote:
LastLibrarySorter_Recommendations_=sortByNull()
LastLibrarySorter_books_=sortByTitle()
LastLibrarySorter_books_filterByBundled%28%29=sort ByTitle()
LastLibrarySorter_books_filterByMine%28%29=sortByN ewest()
LastLibrarySorter_books_filterByPreviews%28%29=sor tByTitle()
LastLibrarySorter_shelfList_=sortByShelfName()
LastLibrarySorter_shelf_filterByBookshelf%28REAL%2 0LIFE%29=sortByTitle()
LastLibrarySorter_shelf_filterByBookshelf%28SELF%2 9=sortByTitle()
LastLibrarySorter_shelf_filterByBookshelf%28SUPERN ATURAL%3A%20%20F.%20Paul%20Wilson%29=sortByNewest( )
LastShelfSorter_books_=sortByAuthor()
So it looks like it's not recognising the "sort by" settings.

How do I fix it?

Added:
OK, since it's only new and hasn't had time to accrue much that can't be replaced. I tried a factory reset. (From the onboard Settings page, then logging into the Kobo desktop via USB and creating an account on the system.)

It still does the same, except that rather being stuck on sorting by Title, it's now stuck on sorting by Recently read. How weird.

I have a question: I've put my books on the device in a folder called "Books", and then sub-folders according to author (I use drag-and-drop from my PC, not Calibre, to sideload books). Is the name of that Books folder case-sensitive? (Likewise, if I want to try out some custom fonts on the new screen, should their folder be named Fonts or fonts?)

For the books directories it doesn't care because it doesn't look at them.
For the FONTS directory it does care and if memory serves it needs to be all lower case.

No idea sorry. I thought it might be caused by a corrupt database or .conf file, but the factory reset should have fixed it if that was the case.

How are you opening the library list? From the menu at the bottom of the home screen or pressing the library tile? The library tile always opens it in "Recently Read" order. The menu uses the last used.

If that isn't the answer, can you check if the shelves or shelf list remember the sort order? Each shelf should remember the sort used, but I can't think of what sort will be used when you open the shelf the first time.

Sorry, but the explanations in the links above don't work for me, I have no idea what they are going on about. I know nothing about hacking and root priviliges, I don't want to prevent my Kobo from registering. On the contrary, I want to continue using my old account. All I really want is *not* having the new layout (i.e. version 2.6.1) and I was totally lost. Fortunately, I found an alternative approach to simply revert back to 2.5.2 with my regular account. It only cost me 20 factory resets or so.

This is what I did:
  1. full reset to factory settings.
  2. attach to PC and connect Kobo
  3. create a copy of the entire .kobo folder
  4. only then start Kobo Desktop
  5. Kobo Desktop will enforce update to the nightmare of 2.6.1 - allow with gnashing teeth
  6. Kobo Desktop will prompt for login data and then start registering the Kobo
  7. at that point, hijack the KoboReader.sqlite (it is rewritten a couple of times, a bit tricky finding the right stage) and copy the file to the backup folder
  8. let Kobo Desktop finish whatever it is doing, but do not allow to eject reader (or one has to restart at step 1)
  9. delete folder .kobo and replace with the backup folder which includes the new sqlite file
  10. eject reader and let it restart
  11. manually update to whatever version one deems fit
  12. celebration dance and a pint
  13. avoid synchronisations and any further use of Kobo Desktop like the plague (regular WiFi, Kobo bookstore and Calibre still work perfectly fine, though)
Probably simplistic in the eyes of you guys, but it works for me.

What you want to do has been discussed plenty of time here. You have over complicated it. Firstly, don't worry about intercepting the database changes. Then, instead of deleting the .kobo folder, open it, and replace the KoboRoot.tgz file and the upgrade directory with the files for the firmware version you want to use. After that, disconnect and the firmware will be installed.

If you are tapping on the Library tile, that behaviour is normal. I suspect it was done that way since the Library tile pops up when you have added new books. If you use the Library link at the bottom of the screen and then books, it will remember your sort selection.

Because I am the only one you quote, I think the "links above", or some of them, might refer to my posts in this thread. But since I don't talk about root privileges or preventing registration, I think you might not refer to my posts. Anyway, my posts are about how to prevent the device from updating the firmware, even if one forgets to delete the update files from the reader after synchronizing with Kobo Desktop or via wifi.

Both my mini and Aura lose their sort settings periodically, and often they do not sort as the bar says they are sorting. I think it was 2.x.x that I noticed it but not sure.

I changed the lines in the config file a few times to sortByAuthor() which sort of worked (worked in some Shelves but not in all) with the side effects being said [Sort] where it would say what order they were sorted in, and on the Aura the tiles moved randomly around the screen for about a week, including the current book tile etc. It was mildly amusing to me for some reason and I actually looked at the home screen occasionally to see what it was doing. Eventually they all settled back into place.
