This thread has links to all the previous firmware versions to download. That way you can enjoy your Aura again and not just have it sitting around hoping for an update that doesn't take away something you enjoyed.

Edit: Yes, I fully realize that criteria may keep me from ever updating the firmware again on my Glo...
You know new features are ok if they are user selectable. Meaning if something works and it works well why take it away completely. Why not just give us the user the choice to display say pre Tiles home page and for those of us that prefer the tiles Give us the choice to use the Home page that we prefer and not just ram it down our throats with out so much as a please and thank you mam.

I happen to like the tiles, but I also understand that for some the older style was preferable and for some still an even simpler home page would be most preferable. So why not go whole hog and give us the user, really the ultimate reason you want to sell your devices too.., the choice of a how we want to see the home screen, all the bells and whistles or slim and sleek... not just some coder who thinks we should be given just his vision no ifs or buts about it!

I completely agree about giving the users choices when it comes to their new features. Unlike you though, I completely hate the tiles on the main screen. Hate how they add themselves back and hate the look of them behind the covers, hate having the clutter of things I don't need often always showing. I'd much rather see more book covers which I use as my "to read next" list. I really doubt they'll ever give users a choice for the main layout.

Well then, you'll be pleased to hear that fw 2.8.1 reduced the top margin to minimal again

I liked the 2.6.1 with the smaller space at the top best, but no space does not bother me. The small space seemed more aesthetically pleasing in that the book looked more balanced, but I don't really notice it after I have turned a page or two.

I am now reading during the day on a Kobo Mini, and in the evening I am back on my KPW (with Duokan), which I am really happy now not to have given away when I bought the Aura, and quite happy so far.

Yes, I thank Kobo for reducing the top margin back to the size of fw 2.5.1. and earlier. But… with fw 2.8.1 it isn't possible anymore to adjust (hack) the bottom footer. This bottom footer is still huge. I little smaller won't harm anyone. The "details" were discussed extensively with fw. 2.5.2 and I don't want it to reproduce it here, but it is the reason why I canceled my pre ordered Aura HD.

But this is the perfect reasoning here for choice. Your point of how you hate the tiles is a very valid one. The reasoning to your argument is sound and logical. So why not provide the user with the choice.. That's the best way to go. A menu option to display the home screen or enable or disable features as the user requires or enjoys. I am rather inclined to agree with you about us never being given the choice as the Kobo Coders along with the Governments of the world don't seem so inclined to listen to the people where logic prevails..

I agree that smaller won't hurt, or an option to turn it off.

What I keep wondering (and this is not Kobo specific but the Aura is a prime example) why the big bezel at the bottom. You need some to hold the circuit board, but this could be more evenly distributed. The mini bezel is slightly larger at the bottom while the Aura bottom bezel is about 3 times larger at the bottom. Makes reading with one hand more difficult.

Actually I find one handed reading to be ok. But with my Big Gorilla like hands this might not be an issue for me, but if one had petite hands as most women do, I can definitely see your point.

Did American customers get the update too? I am not seeing any upgrade when I sync. Just curious.

The updates are always rolled out slowly; normally on a reseller by reseller basis. If you must have it now, go to the Direct Links to Kobo Firmware thead; otherwise just wait and enjoy your reading.

Has anyone else noticed that the double page-turn bug seems to be fixed in 2.8.1? I haven't had any double page turns since I installed 2.8.1 three days ago. It used to happen every 8-10 pages for me. Hallelujah. I hope it sticks.

Software that works correctly and easily is the opposite of being 'worse' or 'taking longer.' Or perhaps you haven't read carefully what people have been writing. Or you are being sycophantic.

Then what's the problem?

The light adjustment mechanism is working correctly in the latest release. Kobo has decided that the correct way to set it takes a few more clicks than the previous method. However, as it now complies with their updated specification, and no reports have been made that the lighting is not working, then the only possible conclusion that can be drawn from this is that the software is working correctly, at least as far as the lighting is concerned.

Given that most of the posts -- by what by my count, are by a minority of the posters -- are saying either "make it work the way I want it to work" and/or "give us choice", which means that when you first connect your Kobo reader, you are either going to have to make a lot of choices or you are going to get a set of pre-canned defaults which 90%+* percent of the users will never change. Either way, the software is going to be more complex which leads to the high probability of more bugs and that those bugs will slip by testing. I still have fond(?) memories of a bug which showed up when you ran Lotus 1-2-3 under OS/2 with a Matrox graphics card set to a non-standard resolution. Works fine until a operation caused the full screen display to be larger than the screen resolution so the right side moved off screen with no way to scroll it back into view.

Moreover I find it interesting that in light of your experience, you would state that software that works correctly and easily is the opposite of "taking longer". My experience from dealing with software is that software that is rushed tends to have a lot more issues.

*: A couple of years back during a security audit phase, we collected various studies from around the Internet on what percentage of people change default settings. For the programs we were interested in (MS Office, IE, Firefox, Chrome, Adobe Creative Suite, Java, etc.), the numbers we found ran from 85% to 98% with the average around 94%. We collected similar data internally by querying the computers and the numbers ran even higher. Quite a few of the younger staff did tend to change their Facebook and other social network settings even though accessing social networks from a work machine was a major no-no at that time.

David
