I am wishing I had found the Honor Harrington books a long time ago. I really like these. I will work on book 8 soon, but I have a couple library books now, starting with Roadside Picnic by Arkady and Boris Strugatsky.

Although it might have seemed that I was slightly ahead of HarryT in my Agatha Christie read-through, it was all based on lies. I had skipped ahead on the Poirots, so as not to interfere with my alphabetical detectives challenge, but now I've gone back and read The Man in the Brown Suit, which I mostly liked, although a few things didn't work for me. It's more light-hearted than usual, the two narrators are quite witty, and as always it was a quick, easy read.

It's called Cormoran Strike #1 so I'm also looking forward to the next Cormoran Strike mystery. Three cheers for J.K. Rowling's second adult novel (which I wasn't able to say about her first one).

Next I'll be reading The Scarlet Slipper Mystery (Nancy Drew #32) by Carolyn Keene (Harriet Stratemeyer Adams) and Shadow Woman (Jane Whitefield #3) by Thomas Perry.

I finished reading both The Scarlet Slipper Mystery and Shadow Woman this morning and enjoyed both of them immensely!

I've decided to begin my third annual re-read of Jim Butcher's The Dresden Files series today. I had planned to begin this re-read a little closer to book 15 of the series, Skin Game's expected publication date of December 3rd 2013, but since I've noticed that my book consumption rate has slowed significantly as of late, I've started re-reading the first book of the series, Storm Front.

Only about 1 in 3 or 4 of the books I'm reading is a Christie, so getting ahead of me wouldn't be very difficult .

I just finished The Horns of the Buffalo by John Wilcox. It is the first of his Simon Fonthill series. I enjoyed this series immensely. If you like Bernard Cornwell's Sharpe Series you will like this one.
Quote:
British redcoats confront the Zulus at Rorke’s Drift.
In 1879, the British redcoats are universally regarded as the finest fighting force in the world. Among them is Lieutenant Simon Fonthill, dispatched to South Africa with much to prove: for Colonel Covington, his former Commanding Officer, has slanderously branded him a coward. In the Cape, tension is high. The Zulus, an independent nation of magnificently militant tribesmen, threaten the colonial government’s vision of a united South Africa. And Simon has been chosen for a particularly dangerous mission: to travel deep into Zululand to discover the intentions of the king. Simon encounters violence and imprisonment before he is faced with his greatest challenge. Escaping from the massacre at the Battle of Isandlwana, he must warn the tiny garrison at Rorke’s Drift of the threat posed by advancing Zulu impis. He has a chance to prove Covington a liar, but he may pay the ultimate price.

Unfortunately this is another eBook that is geo-restricted.
I liked it so much I started the second one.

Having been motivated by the new Wolverine movie, I started reading the Wolverine graphic novel, a reprint of a comic book miniseries from the 1980s if I'm not mistaken.

Lots of detail about Roman military training and organization and action-packed - the first book ends in a cliffhanger - the hero is storming a fortress in a falorn hope.

on to book two , Arrows of Fury
I finished Arrows of Fury and am now reading Fortress of Spears. I believe that I may stop for the moment with that, as there isn't much development here.

Completed A Test of Wills by Charles Todd received from library's Overdrive collection. The writing skill of this mother/son team was good but the mystery plot had a few holes. I can't say more without giving it away. There seemed to be a lot of waiting around for a breakthrough and re-questioning persons-of-interest. Characters were described as complex but little in their actions and speech confirmed such. The most interesting part was the post traumatic stress syndrome experienced by WWI veterans. Rated C- [2 stars]. Probably, won't continue the series.

Just finished a re-read of "1632" by Eric Flint; part of my ongoing quest to catch up on my Baen Webscription purchases - I've now started on Feb 2000, so quite a long way to go still .

I'm sure that every SF lover will have read this book, but just in case there's someone who hasn't, it's the opening book in what's developed now into quite a long series. The small American mining town of Grantsville is caught up in a cosmic "accident" and transported, intact, back in time to the middle of Germany in the year 1631, a particularly unpleasant time in European history (the "30 Years' War"). Realising that they're stuck there permanently, the town's residents decide to found a new "United States of America", while at the same time using their modern technology to try to build a sustainable industrial infrastructure.

A very good book indeed. If there is anyone who hasn't read it, you really should do so.

Thanks for the tip - I have heard it mentioned before on MR (a book club contender, perhaps?) but I haven't read it. I just popped over to Baen to download it, and can't find it listed. Am I just missing something, or is it no longer available via Baen? I find their search feature pretty poor, I must say.

It's not only available, it's available for free.

1632 by Eric Flint

The "Second Edition" isn't free, but doesn't have any new story material, just a new afterword.

I'm really enjoying this. It kept me up until past 2am last night, and it's been a while since a book's done that.

It's also incredibly long! The PDF version is over 1600 pages long!

Just finished Atlas Shrugged by Ayn Rand. I thought it was an interesting read and I had no problem getting through the 1168 pages, makes it perfect as an e-book.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Atlas_Shrugged
Quote:
Atlas Shrugged is a novel by Ayn Rand, first published in 1957 in the United States. Rand's fourth and last novel, it was also her longest, and the one she considered to be her magnum opus in the realm of fiction writing. Atlas Shrugged includes elements of romance, mystery, and science fiction, and it contains Rand's most extensive statement of Objectivism in any of her works of fiction.

The book explores a dystopian United States where many of society's most productive citizens refuse to be exploited by increasing taxation and government regulations and disappear, shutting down their vital industries.
